2018-05-28 13:36:01 +0000 UTCInterestingly, just like that! Ulmo doesn't work without a beard; Tulkas is described as having a beard as well, and Aulë certainly has one too. I fully agree on Mandos and Irmo, aaaaaalthough I could sort of see Mandos bearded, now that I think of it. In fact, my brain now wonders if a beard could be the thing that would finally make me pin down "my" Mandos, who has eluded me for decades. Not a flowing one like Ulmo or Manwë, and not a bristling one like Aulë and Tulkas, but a clipped and cultivated one, perhaps. All those slender and long-haired, beardless Valar just don't do it for me. I remember being very surprised when I discovered this was how the fandom saw them, when I clearly remembered beards being described for some.

I've been pondering this for quite some time and the more I think about it the more I prefer to see Valar bearded (Ulmo is even described that way when he appears to Tuor, but surely also Manwë, Aulë and Tulkas, perhaps Oromë too, Mandos and Lórien not so likely). What do you think, how do you picture them? :-)
