Riding out of the ugly stage

The last stage I posted actually frustrated me - and I knew I had to take some measures to keep me going. Normally, horses' heads the the biggest fun part of any drawing, which is why I usually do them late. Here, I needed to see whether detailing would fix the ugliness. And yay, it did!

I love how the horse has agency now. Before, he didn't really look feral to me because I'm just very poor at reading horse expressions, but now, he looks totally in charge. I really like that. I don't want the piece to feel like "Aw, poor horse!" - "Aw, poor orcs!" (Actual reactions of my two children. XD)

The hair will be darker :) And the smile must be a trick of the angle - there's nobody smiling on here. (Maybe that troll on the right. Doesn't know any better.)

I totally agree about Moryo - he is my scond favourite after Nelyo.

Well, that looks Bragollach-ish, I said to myself before scrolling down to see it is exactly that. It's always nice to be able to recognize a scene, even with the way different artists interpret things. You and your Maedhros, though. :D I reread the Silmarillion not too long ago and I think my favorite Fëanorean is actually Caranthir, surprisingly enough. Even with the temper and hot headedness, he has a tolerance and open-mindedness to him, that while it may be rooted in base practicality or mercantilism is still real. He's capable of listening, a rare trait in a Fëanorean.
