A fitting Throwback Thursday (and suggestions?)

Some of you may remember this? It's almost fourteen years old and has aged pretty well (I've certainly drawn worse chests recently). Back in the day, it was definitely a level-up piece, too, and set off a whole Silmarillion spree of pics posted to Elfwood and DeviantArt that marked my early days in the online fandom. (Including flame wars over Fingolfin's hair colour!)

Has anyone got a suggestion for me what to draw next? I have a deal with Maedhros - every time I put him through the mill in art, I promised to do a "Strong Maedhros" pic of him afterwards. I tried to sell him The Hunt as compensation, but he said it wasn't clear that he was looking strong in that one and anyway, Maglor was ahead of him that was just totally wasn't acceptable. So I need ideas.

Anything I haven't drawn in the last seven-ish years? I'm toying with the Burning of the Ships. (Yes, Maedhros, that counts as strong. Moral winner and all. Be quiet.)

Any better ideas?

A fitting Throwback Thursday (and suggestions?)

His recovery from his captivity and his relearning to fight with his left hand, becoming more deadly than he had been before is another moment of strength and power for him.

He basically managed to bring back together a routed army and launch a counterattack. He's a natural born leader, just like Maglor is a musician or Curufin a smith. That's his special talent. So I think that 'doing deeds of surpassing valour' actually entails inspiring others to do the same. I can well imagine him leading a seemingly suicidal uphill charge to retake Aglon (wink wink, nudge nudge).

Best Maedhros quote ever. I just thought about this last night. Any ideas what "deeds of surpassing valour" might entail? I'd always just seen it as killing a whole lot of Orcs, but that seems a bit basic...

“Maedhros did deeds of surpassing valour, and the Orcs fled before his face; for since his torment upon Thangorodrim his spirit burned like a white fire within, and he was as one that returns from the dead. Thus the great fortress upon the Hill of Himring could not be taken, and many of the most valiant that remained, both of the people of Dorthonion and of the east marches, rallied there to Maedhros; and for a while he closed once more the Pass of Aglon, so that the Orcs could not enter Beleriand by that road. ”

Battle is goooooood!

Jenny Dolfen

Absolutely love the last one.

Lots of great suggestions already! How about Maedhros defending Azaghal or receiving the Dragon Helm from him?

Augusta Vae

The Battle of Unnumbered Tears? That would be a strong Maedrhos!

Getting a hug from little Idril? "Uncle Nelyo, it's good to see you again! What did you do with your hand?"

Lintie

Wow, now that's a powerful moment! Wonderful. Definitely going to be painted!!

Jenny Dolfen

I love your suggestions! Building Himring is fantastic; even if I don't do it immediately, that so goes on my list! And beating Celegorm, haha. Oh my, he'd hate that. XD

Jenny Dolfen

When it comes to 'happy', I think what would make him happy is some quality time with family and friends. Meeting his brothers again? Listening to Maglor sing the song about his rescue (for the upteenth time) and laughing at Fingon's embarassment? Getting a sloppy kiss from Huan? Learning to fight again and beating Celegorm into the dust for the first time? Building Himring and poring over the plans with Curufin? (finally doing something creative and constructive, what a relief for a Feanorian).

Lintie

Since you've been going back to your earlier pictures, how about revisiting that 'Maedhros before Morgoth' idea, this time with the camera at Morgoth's shoulder? Maedhros is brought in straight from the battlefield, still wearing the remnants of his battle finery, and thrown at Morgoth's feet along with his sword and banner. He lifts his eyes... only to see the Silmarils in the iron crown. That moment - when cold dread becomes a white-hot Feanorian fury (or so I assume his reaction would be to seeing his mortal enemy flaunting his father's stolen treaure). That would definitely be a strong Maedhros - bruised and battered but unbroken, giving Morgoth The Feanorian Glare, with the light of the Silmarils falling on his face.

Lintie

I like that, too!

Jenny Dolfen

Definitely not "happy", that one! Strong... certainly. And horribly misguided. I've always wanted revisit his and Maglor's last stand. :(

Jenny Dolfen

On second thought, if it isn't the burning of the ships: How about something more light-hearted with a younger Maedhros standing his ground to a still managable father? ;)

Ninchen

Striding towards the the elven camp at the end to recover the two silmarills from Morgoth's crown. The last of the kin-slayings.
