Added 2017-03-24 15:37:43 +0000 UTCAs far as I can tell, this will be the first fair-haired Gil-galad I'm aware of. At any rate, he won't look like a grumpy old man with a smashed-in face, no sir.
Tolkien intended to have him be descended from Finarfin (through Angrod and Oropher) rather than Fingon. Funnily, since I imagined Fingolfin and Fingon as blonde until I read the later HoMe volumes, my Gil-galad was always golden-haired as well, so after all those changes, he was the only one that was allowed to stay the same.

I remember clearly that the Song about him was the point, where I started to love LotR when reading it the first time and wanting to know more about this world. He's had a special place in my heart ever since. I decided to imagine him as Fingon's son (despite loving slash, some of us at least can make a distinction between fanon and canon) but think Tolkien wanted it otherwise, I just read the HoMe much to late to change my mind on this. I never even thought about, how that would change his hair colour! I don't mind him being blonde. I love this so much already.

2017-03-24 18:27:15 +0000 UTCTolkien decided to change Gil-galad's parentage, and make him the son of Orodreth, who in turn was changed to be the son, not the brother, of Angrod. That makes him a descandant of Finarfin. Tolkien was apparently certain he wanted to do this; in editing the notes for the Silmarillion, Christopher Tolkien decided to leave out the changes, as they would have needed extensive rewritings which he didn't want to do, to leave his father's text as unchanged as possible.
