Loki - Cloak of Feathers

Here he is in all his feathery glory! Treating him with a lot of lift-off techniques (and the puns never end!) was really unusual, and it shows in the end result - but I really like how it turned out. It's softer and also more realistic than my usual approach (though the excessive photo-ref shooting helped with that!). I'll be tackling Isis and Freya next, on smooth paper, to see whether it makes a difference for the technique.

I'm so freaking happy about this class with Rebecca Guay. Learning so much! Can't wait for her to shoot this one down on Tuesday, haha. She also sent round a huge list of calls from galleries... I'll be submitting. Excited!!

Video coming soon!

I'm glad you're enjoying the class, I can see the impact on your art. Those feathers have so much depth to them!

Gwendolyn

Haha, thanks Evelyn! I'm glad it's actually showing. Looking at reference is the hugest part of the class! As you can imagine, it's where most people have difficulty. We all look at photos, but who is able to use a photo for absolute photo-realism? So 80% of what we're doing in class is Rebecca looking at our pieces, and at our reference, and showing us where we went off. I've seen Rebecca trace about fifty faces by now, and it's been an absolute revelation. I'm really learning to *see*. For example, I only realised two weeks ago how an eyebrow worked. How cool is that?

Oh my word. You have such an amazing talent for being able to look at those references you took and recreating them on the paper. I look at references and can't quite capture their realism. You've obviously got a lot out of this class. I can't wait to see the next ones and gush over them as well!

That was what I was going for :) It's still not quite as I wanted it, but it's good to hear it comes across!

Jenny Dolfen

That's really, really good to hear. With this piece, I constantly went from "What on earth am I doing?" to "F*** this is cool" to "F*** this is horrible" several times over the course of an hour. It turned out completely different from what I thought (I barely recognise the wips, myself!) but it's definitely something to pursue.

Wow. Just wow. I know I keep saying that when you post new pictures, but it just never ceases to amaze me how you can still get even better, every single time!

And that texture in his trim looks like woven gold :3
