The diary of T. Iunius Carbo, war veteran, seeker of truth and strange creatures.
The eighth day before the Ides of Iunius
Day 6 of my search for the unicorn
It’s been six days since we left the questionable civilisation of Castra Vetera (and Otho has been grumbling since well before that). My codices have been resting in their oiled bags since Vetera, but since the rain is unlikely to stop anytime soon, I
will trust in Minerva to preserve what I have written. So I shall start writing
my documentation of the search for the unicorn of the Hercynean forest,
ignoring the steady stream of Germanic profanity accompanying Otho’s attempts
to put up the tent in this mud.
The thunderstorms began after we were a day out from Vetera. We have met fewer than a handful of living souls on the muddy tracks that we have been travelling. We were met with blank stares whenever we mentioned the unicorn, except for the last fellow, who might have been a hunter (Otho says he can't be quite sure because of the man’s accent, or possibly because he had all his front teeth missing). He says that many strange creatures live in the forest the the east, and our unicorn might be one of them. He told us to beware of water-hogs (again, Otho wasn’t quite sure what those are, but he swears that’s what the man said). We shall continue our journey at first light tomorrow. If any light makes it through the dense foliage above our heads.
Will Iunius find his unicorn? Will Otho be able to put up the tent? What are water-hogs? And what stranger creatures await in the Hercynean Forest? Find out during the remainder of June!
