Black swans downriver - and loads of thoughts I'd like to share.

Still looks very scribbly, but a lot more work has gone into this now.

I've been thinking about my art a lot this year. Star Wars has been an exhilarating experience - so many new people, plus commissions and even bigger work opportunities that might follow (and I'm not saying it's over, it's just died down a bit). Needless to say, my Star Wars art is about as popular as my Tolkien art. And yet, I've recently read dozens of angry rants about fanart. Never directed at me, thankfully, yet! But the art community is suddenly casting an extremely critical spotlight on fanart as a whole. That's coming from inside the art community; completely; hardly from outside it.

Now I've never been shy about my Tolkien art. I don't even see it as fanart at all, and I know pretty much nobody else does. I've got as good as a permit for making money with it. That very probably won't happen with Star Wars, but at least at the moment it looks as if Disney/Lucasfilm is pointedly looking the other way in the face of a slew of fanart, much of it used commercially.

But somehow, I feel I want to move somewhere. I've considered many things to turn my attention to, from my own long-abandoned Rhyddion story to guppies, even, haha. Rhyddion very probably won't be resurrected - I've hit too many snags with the last few incarnations to just carry on. And while guppies are adorable, they don't hold my fascination as much as other things do.

I don't do fanart because it attracts followers. I'm sure you know that. I draw what fires up my imagination, even if that won't attract followers (even scares people away in droves - Cannae, anyone? XD)

I'm also a rotten storyteller. I'm a good gap-filler; I'm pretty sure I am, and I still think that what I've done with Cannae and a lot of fanfics as well as "missing scenes" from the Silmarillion was genuinely good, but I've been forced to accept that writing a Fantasy epic is not for me. And unfortunately, epic Fantasy (with or without space ships) is all that interests me as an artist. So I will never start my own web comic or something like that.

So right now, I'm thinking that this piece might be a first in a row of mythological pieces, drawing from all sorts in influences. The Mabinogion alone has a lot that I've wanted to paint for a long time (Taliesin, Blodeuwedd, Bran and Branwen), but from the Nibelungenlied to King Arthur, there's a lot of stuff I really want to visit or revisit, and which has been mulled over in my mind for a long time.

Just throwing that out there. As always, happy for any thoughts. :)

Not much of one, probably - Beowulf is too straightforwardly heroic for my taste and lacks my beloved tragedy! ;)

Jenny Dolfen

Any chance that new mythology inspired pieces might include something from Beowulf?

I'm tremendously relieved that you aren't going to give up any of your -- I won't call it "fanart" because that's not what yours is, how about "movie-based art" -- because you live it, we love it, and it IS original. I like what you said about being good at "filling in gaps." That's what you've done in "Learning to Fly," "Why are you angry," and others. But it's never a bad thing to branch out. Create what you love, and try not to worry about sniping comments from the artist community.

Rowana

I love Cannae too and I'm looking for a hard copy as well!!!

Hey Corine, yes, it's a very drastic divide between the artists community and the "viewers" of art! I can definitely testify for the continuing popularity of fanart, and sometimes, it feels weird to have a recent rant about fan artists in my head and then see nothing of that from con-goers, for example. And I wasn't really worried about my own fanart - the Tolkien least of all, and most of my Star Wars stuff certainly not only sells because it's Star Wars but also because of the treatment I'm giving it. At least I hope so. ;) It's just that I don't want to feel so dependent on it, I suppose.

Just when I had time to write a lengthy reply, Patreon went down for maintenance yesterday night. So I wrote the whole thing out and my, now it's gotten a bit long.... I'm not really familiar with the art community, so I have not really and idea what their stance against fan-art is about, although my guesses are it will be about copyright issues, as well as the everlasting debate between own original work and using work from another source like book. movie, series. And I figure people doing fan-art of popular stuff because it’s popular and they want to go with the ride might play a part as well. There are some valid points to say about the two later, I’ve seen many a very popular piece that is just taking too much things from others, and lacking originality. But you are really doing yourself short if you see your own work in that category. Especially with your Tolkien work, there are many pieces that would even fit within a general fantasy design, or even general design at all (Tuor anyone? Mothers still loves it, and she can’t tell an elf from a human). It’s interesting seeing this stance from inside the art community. I think out-side, fan-art is as popular as ever. And with reason! One look at the official Star Wars merchandize at stores here and you wouldn’t say most movies are officially rated ages 12 and up here, no one over 12 would want something of that. And I still cringe at the Hobbit Lego figures... This being said, I can understand you willing to move on and try something else all to well as well. Mythological sounds really nice, Nibelungenlied, Arthurian, Norse myths...I can’t help felling more excited about that then I’ve been about Star Wars, I like the later well enough, but it’s not something I can see on my walls so to speak off...So I hope you’ll find some inspiration in the new direction you’re trying to take now :)

Cannae was the way I found you, Jenny! So even that brought in new fans. One day I will find a hard copy of it for myself and it will be the best day ever. :P But you know that I love the Tolkien stuff as well, and mythology is also my thing, especially the Welsh myths given my name. Really looking forward to seeing what you do with them. <3

Bronwen MacDonald

I'm already planning a Nibelungen piece. ^^

Jenny Dolfen

OMG YES PLEEEEEASE do some Mabinogion art! Please! Yes! Artgasm! Or Nibelungen. Or Arthur. Or anything of that kind really. PLEAEASE!

Ninchen

What happened to the poor tiger? :P

Jenny Dolfen

You can't reply to replies. You can only reply to your comment again and it'll put them in order. Even though I'm more of a Shiva person, all Kali stories are just so much fun and excitement. :D And I just realized Jenny asked for a Korean story not a Hindu one. I shouldn't have been let out of my room today.

Isabella C

@Isabella (I can't seem to reply to replies :/) Indian myths I could flood the page with, having grown up with them. Norse and Greek as well, formed the foundation of my love for mythology :D and the kali story is LOVELY~

Juhi Mendiratta

This is the one I have most frequently herd, and it doesn't have a lesson in it, but is in fact the myth on the founding of Korea. I'm giving you a link because if I tell it, I'll end up messing it up! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ungnyeo

Juhi Mendiratta

Any one tale you love most! :) I know nothing about Korean myths; what about one of those?

Jenny Dolfen

Ummmmmm, ok, which mythos? Indian? Korean? Japanese? Chinese? This is like being in a deluge, hahahaha!

Juhi Mendiratta

I have about four sketches of Blodeuwedd by now, and never get her anywhere! It's a shame!

Jenny Dolfen

Aw, sorry I scared you! :)

Jenny Dolfen

What a lovely idea, visiting and revisiting a rich selection of mythologies! There, having said that first, I must admit your email subject line scared me -- here she is, either writing about a personal loss, I thought, or telling us in poetic terms that she's giving up art! I'm so glad that "you can't tell a book by its cover" (nor an email by its subject line)! I look forward to new adventures in your artistic vision; although I came upon you first through your Tolkien art, so I hope that never vanishes entirely! ^_^

"Blade" McMicking, D.I.

I bet you can guess I'd be more than happy to see any Mabinogion paintings from you, Jenny!
