Smaug - Watercolour and gold leaf

Narrated vid again! This took a little longer - narrated video means I need to be alone for about an hour, which is near well impossible while the kids are home all day during the holidays. So this morning, I took advantage of the fact that the good, catholic three quarters of this family were on crusade - sorry, doing the stations of the cross - and heretical me sat down to narrate a dragon video. It was a very Homer Simpson sort of moment. I regret nothing.

This was so lovely and enchanting to watch! As an inhabitant of the land of the Armadillo, I would have never thought they would inspire dragon scales!! That is the scary part of creating dragons for me: scale variation and trying to make them look unique from the last one I painted!!

Amen about WB. :( In German, it's Kreuzweg vs Kreuzzug, very similar indeed! I'm not sure anyone except my husband says Pastörchen, it fits that guy so well. XD

Now you've done it...I was talking with someone this afternoon and said going on crusade too, instead of taking the stations of the cross -_- Most interesting was how they didn't even notice I was saying things wrong! (the words are very similar in dutch indeed). I've never heard about it being outside though, here it's always inside the church, sometime with paintings as beautiful it would make an atheists heart beat faster, sometime..not so much lol It does't help this isn't a particular catholic part of the country though. And I have to say Pastörchen is a lovely german word....On a whole other note, it makes me quite sad and annoyed to say the least how WB is dealing with non-movie inspired Smaug fanworks.

O_o I have an ever-growing list of things to hate the movies for. This goes very much near the top of it. Thanks for the heads-up!

Mine was nothing like the movie version see here: http://theflyingviper.deviantart.com/art/Red-Dragon-348561367 it was because I used the word 'Smaug' in the title, was such a horrible experience :S I wouldn't want to have the same happen to you :) Xx

Thanks! :) Did you use the dragon from the movie? The Tolkien Estate knows about my works and is fine with them, also for commercial use, and I've never bothered with the movies visually. This should be far enough away from any WB designs to avoid falling into their jurisdiction?

What a fantastic tutorial :) thank you for sharing, I've been tempted to try using gold leaf for some time now and I've got so many ideas :D I often over-render my dragons and want to focus more on shade and light in future artworks ^.^. Also just so you know, I wouldn't name the artwork Smug if you intend to sell it, I did a similar work and received a very nasty letter from Warner Bros threatening legal action :( so you might have to re-name if you intend to sell prints or the original. Keep up the amazing work! Looking forward to more :)

Den Kreuzweg gehen. Proper Catholic communities have a mountain or hill or at least a spoil tip (as do we) where there are pictures/carvings of Jesus' way to Golgatha (stumbling, meeting his mother, being fixed to the cross, etc), and the entire flock walks along these and there are chants and prayers. It is a nice walk, or would be if Good Friday was ever in acceptable weather! Last year it was ice-cold but at least sunny, but today was windy and cold and rainy. So I declared I was staying home. :D Hubby and the kids were in luck though; while Pastörchen would have braved the weather to get at least a modicum of Christ's suffering, the flock preferred to do the walk inside a church. XD

Aww, so you love Armadillo lizards, too. <3 They are funny and sooo cute! ... And as an atheist I must ask - what is "doing the stations of the cross"? :p
