Guppy merfolk have been on my mind for ten years now. I did some sketches of them in various sketchbooks over the years, but none of those was ever turned into anything halfway presentable. Now I've spent a week or two bouncing ideas back and forth with Isabella, who wanted something for a "bubbly" frame she had - and guppy merfolk sort of suggested themselves.
These are so much fun. And also took a lot of toning down. I mean, merfolk are sexy as a rule, but merfolk based on fish whose lives consist of nothing but chasing each other to make (live!) babies? If this was biologically correct, the male should have been even smaller and thinner, chasing around an equally voluptious and utterly unwilling female around, , but for obvious reasons, I went against that.
Guppy merfolk. You never know they were missing in your lives!

All of this, oh yes. I had guppies when I was a teen, and I'll never forget the morning my pregnant female Imilce had jumped out of her nursery tank and the entire aquarium was full of little, big eyed guppy-lings. I had to go to school so I couldn't do anything at the time, and when I came home, a single one was peering out from the plants. His dad, Mars, had eaten the rest. I saved him and named him Bukephalos and he went on to be the sire of many colourful children. Yes, I gave my fish names from classical antiquity. No, I don't think that was strange at all. :D

2016-03-24 15:43:38 +0000 UTCI used to keep guppies. The have such pretty tails, and I think you made the right choice for toning it down. Because if you want to be accurate, at least half of your guppy merwomen would need to be pregnant. Those little fish were ALWAYS pregnant. I know those boys have ~very~ fancy tails, and all the girl fish were like, 'oh my gosh! check out his tail!' But take a break guys, sheesh! (And please don't ask what happened to their babies, oh dear! If you didn't make a nursery for the baby guppies in the tank to hide from the adult guppies... >_<).
