update on my girlfriend: the second operation went well and she is back home now. Ofcourse she still needs a lot of help with everything but recovery can now begin.

Indeed I have read that somewhere too! They can amputate limbs if they get infected so the ant doesn't die. So amazing!

2025-04-13 14:33:13 +0000 UTCPeripherally related, I read a paper in Current Biology that ants--specifically Florida carpenter ants (Camponotus floridanus)--are apparently the only animal known to perform life-saving surgery. You probably knew that, but what a great example of their uniqueness, right? Dr. Bobs. π€
