I only watched this one recently bc of all the stigma around it and I gotta say, I don’t get the hate. It was one of Elias’ first stories, so it’s not gunna be peak. As for the “violence for the sake of violence with no message” idk, some stories are just like that 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’ve read books about child abuse written by the survivors of said child abuse and ngl, this was a lot tamer than that. Now I’m not gunna say this was an epic, bc that gas goblin and exposition cop came outta nowhere and that’s something that made me roll my eyes. Not a fan of the ending. But like? While I get it’s something no one could ever be comfortable with, it’s not exactly the most extreme violence we’ve had on the podcast. And again with “violence for the sake of violence”, urbanSPOOK had a LOT more of that, and there was barely any backlash for it. I think people just rag on this one bc it’s Elias and they’re still uncomfortable about Tommy Taffy. Anyways, I loved the boys’ discussion around this episode, and the protagonist’s fear really came through with the writing, which made it significantly scary for me. Shame about the ending, but we can’t win em all!

I don’t input much but this is genuinely the first time I’ve hated a story. Maybe not everything is my specific favorite but I always find something to enjoy even if it’s just the ridiculousness of it all. This was just blatant torture porn and not really what I come here for. I know the comments sound like a broken record but I think if you are going to tackle more stories in the splatterpunk genre (which it seems like the general consensus is against that) it needs to be better addressed. I love horror but gore just to be gory isn’t enjoyable.

Love the pod, this episode is good as far as the podcast is concerned since the boys respond in a normal if metered way. I get people liking gratuitous in stories like Cormac Mcarthy's novels, even some Stephen King. I wonder if the people defending this choice actually liked the story or if they just feel the need to defend the niche they like. IMO if I were to pick a hill to die on it wouldnt be on this story. The people hating are absolutely ridiculous. As Isaiah said, these stories are catered towards a niche demographic, The CreepCast team has read many different stories with many different niches. Nobody should be punished or even FIRED for the story that was read on this episode. Personally I enjoy stories and books that have more graphic depictions, not for the "torture-porn" aspect of it, but more the experience of reading it itself. Reading these depictions just, in my opinion, give me a broader view of the horror's of the world and allow me to really be grateful for what I have. However one issue I do have with the story is that it feels like it goes nowhere. Sure stories with more graphic depictions rarely need a true ending as that the scariest part of it all, that these evils were done with no true reason. Regardless, this story especially felt as if there was no real explanation to what the "gas" was, or the monster. At first I thought the idea was that the father is depicted as a monster for a deeper meaning, but it was an actual monster? Like what? Anyways i liked the story either way, W HARRY.

Take this with a grain of salt but I think I read somewhere that the author also suffered from csa/general child abuse and I don’t personally really think its glorifying these things because from the mc perspective it’s only terror and confusion. As someone who also writes about situations mirroring their own trauma I can understand using writing as a processing tool and as a way to take control of what happened to me. It doesn’t feel glorified to me personally i just get that raw feeling of horror and discomfort from the actually scary parts. It can be hard to stomach that kind of writing and it is absolutely a niche genre of horror but I don’t think it deserves the hate it’s getting just because some people don’t like it. The ending was ass I can admit that lol it was poorly executed but I think the point of the story was evoking the emotions that horrific child abuse does and it should evoke those feelings. It’s a horrible topic and it’s a hard pill to swallow. The author isn’t the best at building a through line for the stories but capturing the actual horror of the situation is a specific kind of talent imo, I don’t enjoy this kind of horror but I can respect having the stomach to be able to process something like this through these means. I think it’s a complex concept overall and reducing it down to “it isnt tasteful” is an opinion (that hunter is entitled to) but not a fact.

I feel like the biggest shortcomings of this story is that it describes what real child abuse is like to the most intricate detail with the supernatural elements being a complete backburner detail that's only there to justify posting it to nosleep. With Playground, the degree of separation that makes it more tolerable is that the harm towards children is in a more fantastical setting/degree of rational separation to know that this is a story. Like 90% of this could be biographical from the author and id believe you.

I think stories like Elias's have merit, splatterpunk is a longstanding genre that approaches this type of subject matter with a heavy hand, and it has its many detractors, but it also has many people it resonates with. That being said, it is extremely niche, these type of stories are purposely off-putting to a general audience, and I think you guys should vet them better, I dont want the response to this episode to stop you from exploring darker themes, but if you're going to jump into splatterpunk, you either dive in or you find stories that are inspired/influenced by it, not these half-hearted adventures into excess. Love this podcast, love all avenues of horror, but its so hard to interact with this community every time they're sent up in arms by something deemed unpalatable. Also, note to the community, stop attacking the author because he wrote something you dont like? yeah no this author had one good story and then everything else just seems to be this guy wanting to write out violent situations including women and children without getting repercussions from it. Because it is possible to write stories that include abuse and csa but if you do it has to be done in a very careful and respectful manner, this guys stories are just distasteful and contain unnecessarily heavy details about the abuse towards the children, especially the csa, and really focusing on painting it out for the reader, and it’s honestly disgusting and concerning.

Love the banter love the show, but this story fully soured me on Witherow. Made me realize that even in Tommy Taffy, the characters aren't really "people" but just pawns to inflict misery upon, like targets at a shooting range. I think he has talent as a writer from some of his descriptions i.e. Feed the Pig, but the whole poison bank goblin reveal made it clear that the themes of abuse and trauma are there to lull the audience into thinking that it's "deep." I listened to this entire thing hoping it would get better. This might be the worst episode you guys have done. You’ve had so many authors you’ve said you might go back to, why have you kept going back to this guy? Like feed the pig and tall dog were ok and I didn’t dislike Tommy Taffy as much as most but this was awful. The ending just felt like the author thought he had to come up with literally anything to justify wanting to write child torture. I honestly don’t get it. It seems like Isaiah isn’t a huge fan of the amount of just constant violence. Hunter seems mid at best on it. You know a large, potentially majority, of the fan base do not care for the author. This has been a personal pet peeve of mine for a while now but PLEASE cool it with the editorial bits. This is a podcast episode not a papameat video. I along with a large portion of the audience are not watching the video so when the editor starts doing bits we don’t know what’s going on and I personally don’t care for them. I solely mean video based editorial bits that are added post production, not bits done on the podcast even if they are visual as it usually does not mess with the listening experience. Also I would like to request on shorter episodes like this one another short story or two could be read in addition to the story already picked out. It’s very disappointing to wait a whole week and see such a short runtime when many of us use these to help get through work. This one has convinced me that Witherow is not a good writer. Feed the Pig worked because it was comparable to Hell, so all the "Wouldn't it be fucked up if..." could just be thrown in and be fine. But this and Tommy Taffy are just gorn with no substance. Poor setups to torture one note families with no sense of character, reason, justice. Things just happen in his stories because, "Wouldn't it be fucked up?" Yes, yes it would Witherow, but that doesn't make it a story.

I had this conversation with my friend about how rape is portrayed (specifically in Manhunt), and we talked a lot about how language impacted the way we viewed the scene. One way the author really put me off her work is through the language she used (e.g. using ‘cock’ instead of penis). And in this story, using sexual language like “I’m going to fuck your mother” makes it very clear the author didn’t intend for this to be a sensitive depiction of sexual violence, and instead wanted to shock the reader by exposing them to the most horrible thing he could think of.

So. I love Elias's work. Sometimes he goes a bit too far (original Tommy Taffy story) but I love his weird symbolism for different things and when he reels himself back like in Tall Dog, or his novel Outlast Your Gods he really can nail some interesting ideas. Like he pulled off grief being symbolised by big dog and made what could have been goofy really impactful. Hell even in the Third Parent novel he tones the sexual aspects of it down. Its still there, its uncomfortable but its toned down and I feel it gets the message of what Tommy represents. And he has such a way with words that highlight despair and depressing topics ( especially in The Black Farm at times) but this is just disappointing. There are other stories I think are worse but this takes my cake as most disappointing. The hanging section legitimately gave me an anxiety attack. My problem with this story is theres no justification or meaning for the violence. (Not sure if thats the right way to put it) In Feed the Pig, Black Farm and Third Parent, I feel the violence highlights the uncomfortable, violent nature of those worlds. This, theres none of that. I see what Elias is going for, the idea is solid. But wow this was too far it about made me feel sick. I hope they dont shy away from his works in the future. But someone's gotta screen his stories better, I know hes capable of so much better shit. X.X This was diabolical of Harry to suggest.
