I liked this one a fair bit.
I saw three (presumably restored) Schimmwägen a few years ago. They were pottering down the Donau Kanal in Kelheim. I saw them from a bridge and even I am sure I took pics. I cannot find those pics because being an old man sucks.
Nevertheless, they were going downstream and the amount of free board was... Worrisome. I wondered how much would it be if you were actually crossing. But I would rather not experience it myself.
And that was with two people on board.
So, yes it floats, but that is about it. Which makes the whole propeller affair a bit too much, if you ask me. The idea of using a PTO is fine, although I wonder how it would be maintained. It must have been kept covered, else damage to the engine would be more likely. That is definitely a down side.
If I understand correctly, the argument of motorbike replacement is based on the plate selection? That sounds extremely weak. Side square plates are even common today in some vehicles. I am sure though, this would be way better than a motorbike as a long distance courier.
Then again, I bet this was better for touching the bottom on funny roads than the conventional version.
