Drum Machine 101 Episode 4: Swing

Hello everyone! We're happy to announce the release of the fourth Drum Machine 101 episode :) This time we tackle a subject that is often treated as a magic ingredient and not always fully understood. In this video, we explore swing in both an intuitive and technical way so there's no more doubt what that swing/shuffle control actually does - and why it behaves so differently on various machines and DAWs (the TR-6S/TR-8S shuffle values can downright puzzle you).

And Beatbunny arrives just in time for Easter ;) As soon as we sat down to photograph the first frames for the stop motion animation we realized how much we missed making these. We hope you enjoy the video!

We're sorry that finishing the episode took so long, but now that Captain Pikant has recovered, our schedule is back to normal. This also delayed the new Drum Machine 101 book chapter on "Swing/Shuffle", but it will be ready in the next few days! And we're already busy producing the next video :)

All the best

Thanks Steve! If you have a sequencer you can set to 8th note swing and you can crank the swing level so far up that you can move the even steps by a 1/16th to the right then yes, you can reach the "a" position with the second 8th note and count them as such :) But that would be a pretty extreme case of swing.

Hi Captain Pikant, and the Intern, I have a question about swing and hope it's okay to ask it here. When counting a pair of swung 8th / quaver notes, would it be correct to count / play them as 1 (e, and ) a (where the notes in the brackets are not played)? Or even as 1 (trip) let? Also thinking aloud but would it be possible to play 1 (e, and) a straight, as that can show up in music that is played straight. In that case is it just that it adds a bit of syncopation, assuming that it's not constantly across each bar? Very cool video by the way. Love the groovy rabbit and the stop motion. Your presentation style is so cool.

Steve

Hi ZE, as mentioned above there was a small delay. We're currently finalizing the chapter and it will be ready later today :) You should get a notification from Patreon as soon as it's out.

I can't find this in the drum machine 101 book
