Comments

I’m sure with your skills, you’ll figure it out in about 3 minutes per song!

Chad Bye

Thanks so much for your nice comment Chad! Haven't listened to the Cocteau Twins in a long time but we'll take a look as soon as we find some time :)

Captain Pikant

new subscriber - I can't believe I finally found a source who can actually help me learn how to better use my drum machine. I adore your transcription catalogue - I've never seen anything like that before and it is incredibly helpful as I begin my journey. I always found that it's best to learn a new instrument mimicking other's work. it just makes it that much more interesting - use it as a starting point as I continue to grow. At least that's how I taught myself guitar 30 years ago (gotta love 90s grunge). I would LOVE you forever and ever, whether you like it or not (ha), if you transcribed some Cocteau Twins - anything off of Heaven or Las Vegas... I love those simple 80s drums, giving you room to breathe.. and laying guitar on top. Not sure if you take requests, or if you need a particular donation, but I'm all up for it. I feel rejuvenated. THANK YOU!!

Chad Bye

Yeah, I definitely knew better than to embark on a Richard James track this early. I just started with portishead. I have to go to work, but I have some questions, not about the individual triggers, but about the layouts of the patterns in the order in which they would occur in the song. I’ll hit you up about it later.

Kenny

Hi Kenny! If you check the descriptions of the individual drum patterns you will find a bunny rating that helps you judge their difficulty. Generally we think it's best to start with a song you like - although maybe stay clear of Aphex Twin at the start of your journey ;) But a syllabus is actually a cool idea, maybe we should look into that :)

Captain Pikant

Hi guys, if I wanted to break this down into a daily practice schedule, not just try implementing the pattern from the transcription, but also going through the DM 101 book, do you have a syllabus of sorts? I am learning all but the basics, things like microtiming and swing, ive always just done it by ear without any real understanding of how it works. Do you have an order you recommend? Or are they somehow categorized easy to advanced? Or?

Kenny

I was thinking of 'This Fractured Mind' or 'Across this Fine Line'

Stefano Leone

Thanks Stefano! Any particular tracks you can recommend? :)

Captain Pikant

New subscriber - thanks for the incredible work. I was wondering if there's any chance to see anything from Nation of Language and in general, an example of motorik-kraut beat in the style of Neu. Thanks!

Stefano Leone

Can you please please do some classic goldie drum and bass. Yes I know it was all samples but would love to recreate with some machines. Come on!!

russell

I wrote a paper on them for a history of electroacoustic music class and there's a lot of interesting production and techniques similar that I hey did really early on

Ian shreve

I read about that as well! Super interesting since multiband processing has become a staple technique in modern productions :)

Captain Pikant

I recently learned about cEvin Key's use of a PA crossover and separate effects loops on each frequency separation on the 909 which definitely made their use of it really interesting

Ian shreve

The choke, dead lines, first aid, Vx gas attack, or last call are some interesting ones in my opinion, they are one of my favorite bands so I may be a bit biased

Ian shreve

Oh boy do I

Ian shreve

Do you have any favourites besides "Dig It" and "Smothered Hope"?

Captain Pikant

what are the chances we get some more skinny puppy patterns??

Ian shreve

I have a request for a song — The Knowledge by Toasty 🙏🏽🤩

A

Would love a transcription for Just Believe by Hard Drive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Epd9Jsj7f80

Nadeem Inayat

How about the drum pattern for Squarepusher - Beep street ?

Lextron

Happy to see you find the idea interesting! Well, I dunno, but I'm watching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5eu-1wtgsQ as we speak and it could perfectly be "just" samples or synth sounds created by them and a DAW instead of a hardware drum machine with whatever sounds come with it. But again, what do I know. :)

icaria36

Love me some Modeselektor & Apparat! I think "Rusty Nails" might be worth a transcription ;) Do you happen to know whether they used a specific drum machine for that? Sounds like a 707 is in there.

Captain Pikant

I came to this catalog sure to find something about Moderat, but to my (relative) surprise... What about starting with something easy like Rusty Nails? ;) Or any alternative. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoxUiqUpkw4

icaria36

Any change to help me figure out the drum patter of this song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4sk0uDbM5lc 🙏🏼

ZE

Hi Max, thanks for the recommendation! We're always looking for interesting polyrhythmic drum patterns. But the first track on that album doesn't seem to have any drums at all?

Captain Pikant

i have a challenge for you Musik Für Cats by cevin Key (percussionist for Skinny Puppy) the first track on the "Musik Für Cats" album has some weird polyrhythmic thing happening which I can't figure out

Max Hodges

That's awesome Robert! Thanks for taking the time to compile that playlist, we're sure a lot of people here will appreciate it :) :)

Captain Pikant

Thanks for your work Captain Pikant. I compiled all songs that I could find into a spotify playlist. Feel free to join it. Very interesting mix of music from so many genres. Love it. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0YN06DF0YqDvYr40n2KT8f?si=9UWeQurFRGe95lWL7nQYTg&pi=e-suMF4WKISzWB

Robert Logue

Completely understand, Thanks for taking the time to respond. Keep up the great work.

Mike Fox

Hi Mike, we often make updates to the individual posts and to the sound samples. At the moment we don't have the time to maintain this as well as an up-to-date package download.

Captain Pikant

Hey y'all, would you ever consider putting all of these into a package download? Would really love to get all of them and pour through "book" style, but it's taking me a while to download them.

Mike Fox

Hi interzone, Elektron's Digitone, Digitakt and Syntakt all have their 16 step sequencer lane broken up into two rows, so you just have to map the 16 steps of the transcription to these two rows :) Regarding the horizontal line take a look at our guide on "How to read the drum pattern transcriptions" https://www.patreon.com/posts/how-to-read-drum-55107426

Captain Pikant

Hi. Does anyone have a guide or advice on how the patterns map to Digitone? Or maybe my question is even simpler - are the 16 steps in a line of the pattern PDFs analogous to the 16 steps of one bar on the Digitone? Also - does each Part have two patterns separated by the long horizontal line? Thanks !

interzone

mike condon

Hi Alexi, we'll do another Pattern Poll here on Patreon soon, be sure to enter it then :)

Captain Pikant

Hi captain. A pattern that make me love the drum machines like 808 and DMX is rock it by Herbie Hancock. Any chance to have it here?

Alexi Wiedemann

Hi Axel, there are no transcriptions in this post, these are all just links to the individual posts. Maybe the Patreon mobile app has problems opening these links to the individual posts.

Captain Pikant

It happens when I’m in the big folder with all transcriptions. When I open them in the individual post it works fine

Sonic Prayers

Thanks Axel! Unfortunately we don't have an iPhone to test this on. The transcriptions should work fine since they're are all standard PDF files. Does this only happen with specific files? If so, which ones? Can you open them on your computer?

Captain Pikant

Hey! Loving your work and you really helping me to discover how my RD-9 works! But I’m having trouble opening some files on my iPhone. Doesn’t show anything just a grey screen with the title. Any fix for this?

Sonic Prayers

That makes us really happy! Thank you so much for this comment :)

Captain Pikant

Hi there. I'm usually a bass player, but earlier this year I remembered how much fun it was to mess around with step sequencers back in the long-time-ago. I also love electronic music. So I picked up a TR-6S. Next stop-YouTube! Yours was the first video I watched and I've been a fan ever since. Your videos and transcriptions have been a refresher course as well as teaching me some new things. I like doing this and so I've gone a little deeper down the rabbit hole. Your output is anticipated and appreciated very much!

Wet Gremlin

Hi Chris, not at the moment but you can always send us a private message here on Patreon :)

Captain Pikant

Is there a general place to post comments/questions?

Chris Jacobie

Or maybe Supersonic by JJ Fad

Joseph Horseradish

Would love to see transcription of Tone Loc's Wild Thing, even though I know it's sampled on an SP-12, not one of the Roland machines.

Joseph Horseradish

Love your work, Captain! I'm brand new to the community, also brand new to using synths & drum machines! I've been a guitarist forever (over two decades), just getting into the world of analogue synths, drum machines, and sequencing. Thanks to your videos, I've learned a lot already - got my first Roland TR-8s, a JD-08 and a JX-08, and I'm off and running!

Joseph Horseradish

🤞 One day you’ll do Blue Monday

Kool-ade

Hey Christopher, welcome aboard :) We sometimes do a "call for patterns" to collect everyone's suggestions for a poll on what we should transcribe. Be sure to enter it then :)

Captain Pikant

I’ve joined patreon for this too. Absolutely love it. Any chance you could do Hardknox’s “Fire Like This”? It’s the beat that was on Me, Myself and Irene just before Charlie becomes Hank. It’s such a wicked beat, and a great track

Christopher Crumpet

Hi Jason, welcome aboard! No we didn't have the chance to try the Torso T-1 yet :)

Captain Pikant

Just joining up on Patreon after watching several of the videos (found you looking for tutorials on the Deluge). Curious if you have had your hands on or have any thoughts on the Torso T-1? I’ve recently purchased one and am delighted with it.

Jason Nicholas

Join the Patreon for all of this work ! I love your videos and how you're being didactive to beginners

Gwenael Couvidat

Just joined from watching the videos ~ love you work Captain Pikant and the Intern

AfroGrit

I appreciate all the work you put into your productions and references. I've learned a lot and got introduced to many songs I missed in the past.

Michael Ner

Thank you! This is very helpful.

Thaddeus Hess

Yes, it's a Linn.

Simon Young

Haven't heard that one before, sounds like a Linn LM-1 judging by the Hand Clap. We'll make a call for patterns soon to collect entries for the upcoming poll, be sure to enter it then :)

Captain Pikant

A deconstruction of Pete Shelley's Witness The Change would be great.

Simon Young

Thank you, I'm looking forward to it!

Bogdan Stochin

We will soon make a call for pattern recommendations. Be sure to look out for that and throw that pattern into the hat, then people can vote on it :)

Captain Pikant

Could you deconstruct Ulrich Schnauss https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLNM-rJi1mM

Bogdan Stochin

Thanks Flavio, those two were indeed missing :)

Captain Pikant

Thanks guys!!! Could you check #78 and #79, maybe not included in the list? :)

Flavio Bánterla

thks for all!!! Amazing shared knowledge thks again!!! HNY

Toff.Chunks

Hi ben, not at the moment. We update older patterns and the corresponding sound examples from time to time, so keeping the individual posts as well as an archive up to date would take us too much time.

Captain Pikant

I was thinking that too, but just downloaded them one by one as wanted them now 😂

James Gregory

Any chance these could all be zipped up before I download them all one by one?

ben
