Quite a few of you asked for Nine Inch Nails / Trent Reznor patterns and I'm happy to oblige. Here's one from his side project "How to Destroy Angels". More to come soon :)
The drum machine featured on this song is the Sequential Circuits DrumTraks from 1984 (some of you might recognize it from Daft Punk's "Short Circuit"). It has per step pitch and volume automation features, so Trent probably programmed an additional Hat with minimal volume two steps after each Open Hat - which would result in the abrupt choking of the Open Hat and the very tight feeling of the beat. Another way to achieve this is to cut the recording into loops, not allowing the Open Hat to ring out.
The chorus introduces an additional Closed Hat as well as a Tambourine. I took both sounds from the 707 and they fit pretty well (the Drumtraks Tambourine sounds a little too much like a coin purse for my taste). But Trent is a pretty good tambourine player, so maybe he even played it himself?
