Prince & The Time - 777-9311 (Drum Pattern No. 43)

This is probably my favourite Hi-Hat pattern ever! While the song was written and produced by Prince, the drum beat apparently was a stock pattern on the Linn LM-1 created by David Garibaldi, the drummer for Tower of Power. The track's groovy Hi-Hat programming fooled many into thinking it was played by a live drummer on a real hi-hat. The LM-1's unique way of generating the Hi-Hat signal certainly plays a part in that and we'll take a closer look at it in the upcoming video about "Hi-Hat Humanizing". Do you have any favourite Hi-Hat patterns? Let us know in the comments.

Me too! While Prince really was a master at programming the LM-1, this stock beat apparently was too good not to use it in a song ;)

I love this pattern. Makes that drum machine even more mystical to me. I knew it was a major part of Prince's sound in that era, but I did not realize that he was using presets! That thing was a Box o' Funk.

I've actually been working this out on drum set lately! This will add to my practice/understanding.
