A polishing day is a day I spend improving an existing part of the game, instead of always just working on the next sprint. The current polishing task is: add mom and dad jobs to the Lifepath.
I finished adding the starting mom and dad jobs today. Some of them are conditional (e.g. stockbrokers can only spawn in certain hometowns), so we’re repurposing part of the relationship table code to make that work.
I know this is a minor feature, but I’m excited about it because of the way it interacts with two other systems: Hometowns and Upheavals.
For example, today I wrote an Upheaval for a military family: dad leaves the army and gets a job as a military advisor in Hollywood. To support this I created a new hometown (Los Angeles), which gave me the idea to create a clutch of new mom and dad jobs: now parents spawning in LA can start with jobs ranging from Starving Actress through Stuntman and Screenwriter to 80s Film Star and Movie Producer (depending on the family’s Social Class).
This is now nearly ready to release! I’ll continue on the next polishing day, which is next Sunday.
