Hello Female Agent fans, this is Dissonant Soundtrack broadcasting from my hidden bunker. I’ve broken radio silence to talk about Gatekeeper and his Aftermath Team, a fellow text game developer and a very prolific writer. I’ve been a fan of his for a long time, and he’s graciously allowed me to collaborate on CHYOA and talk his ear off about development.

Gatekeeper’s got a lot of stuff (I did say, prolific, right?) but his current projects are The Allure of Wanton Cove and Inheritance.

Wanton Cove is about a hard-boiled noir detective investigating the disappearance of his friend’s son. He tracks him to a small, rainswept fishing town on an isolated island where the men are inexplicably outnumbered by women, and the women are horny as hell. The more he explores, the stranger things get.

Gatekeeper has a fantastic eye for detail and prose, and the text changes in subtle and critical ways as you play. Fans of Lovecraftian genre fiction should feel right at home. As far as content goes, it is outside the mainstream but he makes it work in ways that I did not expect. I was not a fan of futa or transformation stories, but it is so well-done that it won me over. As far as length, that obviously depends on reading speed, since I would not suggest skimming. For me a complete playthrough takes a few hours, with more if you choose to run down each side story on the island.

Wanton Cove is also the rare completed game, though Gatekeeper continues to add high-quality illustrations and expand out the side stories, so even if you have played it before it is worth coming back periodically to take another tour.

His other current project is Inheritance. In it, the player is an average man who suddenly receives a large private estate from his uncle. When he arrives, he finds that his uncle has left him two female slaves. What to do with them is entirely up to you.

Where Wanton Cove is a focused narrative, Inheritance is a sandbox/life-sim game where the player gets to set their own objectives. It’s very early on in development, but the foundation is there to build a robust experience. I would recommend it to fans of more open world games like New Life.
