The INLA weren't so much 'a brach of the IRA' as they were a breakaway and hostile group. There was the Official IRA (who were Socialists who wanted a United Ireland) who then had the Provos (Provisional IRA - the one people think of when they hear the word 'IRA', who were mostly Socialists but didn't really have an agenda aside from 'Brits out') breaking off because they thought the Officials ('Stickies' as they became known) weren't violent enough and then the INLA broke off from the Officials because they were considered too pacifist. The INLA and IRA hated each other and if I were an INLA guy I'd be a lot more scared of an IRA guy than a British soldier. A big reason the IRA hated them was because they were terrified that the INLA's Communism was tank the Irish Republicans support among Irish-Americans. Please forgive my autism - I'm a Belfastian.
