The Sorcerer, Revisited - Semifinal Draft

Hello there patrons!

I recently got a chance to playtest the Sorcerer revisited and my findings were very useful. If you haven't seen the most recent version (before this one) it was posted on the blog a few weeks back. You'll note a few changes to this revised, semifinal draft:

- Increase in spells known
- Increase in Metamagic options known
- The "nova" quality of Font of Magic feature has been toned down dramatically in terms of options added to the sorcerer but has been increased in power in terms of raw output

Barring any major concerns, I believe this is the final draft of the class that will get pushed onto DM's Guild before the end of next month. Please let me know your thoughts and, if you get the chance to test it, let me know how it feels in play!

Thanks,
Benjamin

They were looking at level 6 with twinned fire bolt, yeah. They were doing math with a draconic sorc that gets to add its cha mod to a damage roll from Elemental affinity, making it 4d10+cha if both attacks hit. Compare to a fighter with a great sword doing 4d6+str+str if both attacks hit.

I appreciate you sharing you and your buddies' thoughts! I'm not sure I quite understand the concern they have though. They are worried primarily about made an attack cantrip (like Firebolt, for example) + Twinned Spell? This would cost 1 sorcery point each time and would deal 2d10 damage (if both attacks hit). A fighter at that level would be dealing probably equivalent or higher damage since they add their ability score modifier to damage and possibly the benefit of a Fighting Style. That equivalency scales too. Is that what they were worried about?

I shared this with some buddies I game with. I’m not quite as good at assessing balance and abuse-ability as they are. They were concerned about the spammability of metamagic on cantrips to create a magic artillery that outshines a fighter on damage, especially given Font of Magic’s refresh on sorc points (doubly so after level 5). If that was all the class could do, that’s one thing, but it can out-damage a front liner all day long with magic OR be utilitarian and use its points to cast other spells. The switch-hitter nature enabled by Font of Magic and the same resource pool for both metamagic and spells concerned them.
