https://dicecloud.com is now the home of version 2!

Version 2 is a major milestone for the app, and I would like to thank all of the Patreons for making it possible. This is just the start, soon I will be posting the roadmap for 2.1 and beyond. Version...

Version 2 is finally going into open beta in just over a week's time!
This update will make version 2 (beta.dicecloud.com) accessible to everyone, for free, with some limitations. This update will also remove all restrictions from version 1 (dicecloud.com), making previously paid features of version 1 available to all users.

Open Beta
Version 2 (beta.dicecloud.com) is getting to the point where I'd like to move from a closed beta to an open one. The plan is to give all users access, but have some reasonable limits on free users to keep a cap on hosting and data costs.
Along with this, to celebrate the launch of v2 open beta, I will be retiring the $3 tier, and the full benefits in...

Just a quick look at how slots make building characters in DiceCloud version 2 amazingly fast. Building out your character is now just choosing to fill slots from libraries. Either from libraries that you have built, or ones you are subscribed to from the community.

When a creature performs an action, or makes a saving throw, DiceCloud v1 assumes you are playing at a table, and will be rolling those dice yourself, but as social distancing and online games become the new norm, the need for online dice rolls grows ever greater. The log is where those rolls will be displayed.

The log appears on the right side of your character sheet. For now it is the primary...

Some time ago there was a small bug report on version 2's handling of dice rolls: '2d8 + 2' was being factorised as '2(1d8+2)' which might make some kind of sense from an algebra point of view, when it comes to dice rolling, it's not the same thing at all.
Both version 1 and 2 of DiceCloud use an external maths library to parse and calculate things that are entered into formula fields, namely Mathjs. However, an important featu...

Work steams ahead on the version 2 beta. Here is a list of all the updates that have been made over the last 12 days.

- removed starter set character links from home page
- Properties in library that don't have a specific field no longer show zombie fields of other properties when navigating between them
- Tooltips on the tree tab now behave and don't wander over to other tabs
- Deleting effects and properties now corr...

It's been a while since the last v2 update post here, but that doesn't mean things have slowed down on development.
Focus over the last few months has been on getting the new libraries built and making them a pleasure to use.
Libraries will form the backbone of interacting with DiceCloud going forward, and because they share a lot of user interface elements with the character sheet, work on them sets up the upcoming work on character sheets to go significantly more smoothly.

DiceCloud, is three things. It's a data structure for storing D&D characters, it's a character sheet that displays that data nicely, and it's a bunch of forms for editing that data.
In version 2, all three of those things are changing, some of them a little, some of them a lot, but all of them have to be re-written, and at the moment I'm doing the entirely un-glamorous work of writing forms for everything.

DiceCloud 1.11 is out today with an overhaul of the Patreon Insiders exclusive feature: Item Libraries.
Item libraries allow you to create, and share libraries of items that are available across all your characters. You can easily add library items to your characters from their inventory tab. `Add > Item from library`, saving time creating the same items from your campaigns over and over again.
You can also subscribe to community-made item libraries, all you need now is the lin...

Version 1 of DiceCloud has some limited support for storing libraries of items and spells. This is how the current SRD library works behind the scenes: it's just a special case of custom libraries that everyone has access to.
If you support DiceCloud at an Insider level, you will also have access to a beta UI that lets you create and share libraries of items across characters, and with other players.
In the Version 1 implementation this is limited to items and spells, and you can'...

Work on version 2 continues at a steady pace, and while a lot of back-end changes are happening that aren't easy to show off, one thing that I can show on the front-end is dark mode.
Dark mode has been a long requested feature in DiceCloud, with players often resorting to third party scripts to bring the brightness down, so they aren't glowing with digital light during dimly lit D&D sessions.
While dark mode will be off by default, it will be saved as a user setting, and once ...

One of the most requested features in DiceCloud is the ability to add your own stats to your character. The stats that DiceCloud currently supports are almost all of the stats that could be acquired by characters using the player's handbook only, but not all of those are accounted for.
What if your character gets a flying speed? What if your campaign uses honor as an ability score? What if you home-brew a "rocks fall" saving throw to preempt an angry DM? What if you'd like to separate ...

In the last post I looked at the current state of health bars in DiceCloud, now I'd like to show their current state in version 2.

Health bars in version 1 relied on dragging to increment their values. This is intuitive and feels good to do, but misses out an important reality: dragging is a fairly inaccurate action, and damage or healing done to a D&D character is always in precise amounts...

As you may or may not know, DiceCloud is getting a version 2. It's an almost complete rewrite of the app, and once it's done and tested, all existing DiceCloud characters will be migrated to the new version. Development is still very much underway, and a beta only going to be likely near the end of 2019.
What a new version does do, is allow me to look critically at all the components that make up a DiceCloud character sheet, and really decide if they are doing everything they can to...

I'm in the process of adding tiers to DiceCloud's Patreon, to help give back and reward the Patrons who make running the site possible.
If you are currently a Patron, you'll need to opt-in to tiers you already qualify for. If you have ideas for different rewards you'd like, or new tiers, let me know in the comments.

Up until this point, DiceCloud's server has been scaled up and down to meet demand, because running at full capacity all the time has been too expensive to maintain. An unfortunate side effect of this is that every time the demand spikes unexpectedly, the server would run out of memory.

But now, thanks to increased Patreonage, DiceCloud will be running at full capacity all the time, meaning increased ...

Thanks to DiceCloud's patrons, DiceCloud is now live at a new host. Which should give us the following:
- Better stability, DiceCloud shouldn't slow down nearly as much, or as often
- SSL, all communication with the DiceCloud server is now encrypted
- Oplog tailing, which should make updates propagate faster between different users, and generally take a bunch of load off the server
- Faster response times when adding new items and spells
Thanks for all...

Thanks to Patron support, DiceCloud is going to be moving to a new hosting provider (Scalingo) in the next few weeks. You can try it out here: https://dicecloud.scalingo.io, the site has a copy of the DiceCloud database, so your login details and characters should all be there.
The move to Scalingo should improve load times, reduce delay that impacts some actions, make characters sync faster between users, and generally...
