Writing Blog: Spoilers

Disclaimer: Contrary to the title, there are no spoilers in this post.

I looked at the calendar and realized I had only made one writing blog post this January. Part of it is because I’ve been super busy getting everything ready for February, but the other is that some of the topics I want to cover are locked behind spoilers.

Which, I guess, is as good a topic as any.

See, I am the sort of person who doesn’t mind spoilers. In fact, there are times when I go out of my way to look for spoilers before watching something. This, I have found, does not ruin my viewing experience. In fact, I have found that it enhances it sometimes.

There have been many times when I have read spoilers and thought they sounded pretty dumb. Then when I go watch/read the thing, I end up liking it a lot. It’s all about the execution for me. Knowing what happens doesn’t ruin things for me, because I am way more interested in how it happens.

Of course, not all people are like that.

In fact, I’m probably in the minority. Most people dislike spoilers. Some hate them with passion. For them, getting spoiled can ruin their experience.

That’s why I try to be super careful about spoilers.

There are times when I see people leave questions in the comments, and I want to answer them. Then I stop and ask myself, “Does this answer count as a spoiler?”

The question is way harder to answer than it sounds.

There are times when, to give a full answer, I would have to spoil something. However, if I say something like, “I can’t tell you right now.” I’m kind of hinting something will happen later. I also worry that by answering, I may unintentionally call attention to a clue the audience has not noticed yet.

Then there’s the part where I have to keep track of three separate release schedules. You guys have no idea how many times I’m about to answer something and go, “Oh, wait. That chapter hasn’t come out for them yet.”

So usually, there are a lot of questions I end up not answering. I am not kidding when I say I read every comment. Even the super long ones.

It’s figuring out whether to answer them or not that’s an issue for me.
