So awesome you got a chance to try out 40K with a friend who could give you a good walkthrough! I started building/painting during Covid lockdowns as a new hobby and now I have a full army of about 3500 points worth of Adeptus Mechanicus that I bring to a local shop and play every couple weeks. It’s absolutely crazy expensive, but it’s super fun and if you can find a good local community it can be a great social activity, too, not unlike DnD. I think you’re about right on the entry price, Ian. You could probably build a 1000 point army, the smallest game possible called an incursion, for about $300-$400, but if you want to play 2000 points, or the more common Strike force game, it’s probably going to set you back $700-$1000 depending on the army you pick and the models you decide to use. I built up my army to where it’s at now very gradually over about 5 years. Balance is generally pretty decent but some armies (like mine right now) aren’t as strong as others. However, a new edition of rules comes out every three years and overhauls everything and armies can go from poor to high performing, so just pick the army you like the most and don’t worry about the rules so much.
