Played on a Real 1854 Concertina!

Those of you who have played through Grace's Chapter 5 may have encountered a sea shanty that our composer Cheasy Dino wrote for a particular scene-- which I won't spoil for those who haven't yet seen it. Since this was one of the last songs finished before release and a powerful moment in the game, we went all out to make it special... by hiring a professional concertina musician to play the piece on an original antique concertina!

What is a concertina? It's a squeezebox, a small accordion popular among sailors for its portability on long sea voyages and commonly accompanying their singing shanties. Developed in 1829 by English inventor Sir Charles Wheatstone, the concertina owned by the musician we hired is a Wheatstone original produced just 25 years later-- and it's amazing to hear Cheasy's music played on the real thing!

What you hear in the game (and in the song above) are Jamie Jordan's melody and accompaniment, which he mixed together and mastered to sound rich and clear. But if you'd like to see and hear the real deal, I've attached a video Jamie sent us of the instrument being played!

I want to give a huge thanks to Jamie for working with us to create a special and authentic moment for Grace's finale, and a big shout out to Cheasy for composing and playing the song for Jamie to play. (Bonus shout out to the player on Itch who was so taken by the shanty, he or she wrote fan-made lyrics for the piece!)

Thanks all, and hope you enjoy this tune and the story behind it!

I’ve come to accept that this tune will live rent free in my head forever and to this day still hum/sing it spontaneously on the daily grind. And thanks for the little shout out as well it really made my morning ^w^

Yeah, I hope so too! Guess he wouldn't own an antique concertina if it shanties weren't up his alley, haha!

I'll let Cheasy know! We're incredibly fortunate to have such a talented composer on the team!

Little Napoleon

Well written and soulfully played-- a potent combination!

Little Napoleon

Beautiful and very faithful to the time period! Hope the musician had a fun time playing it too.
