What I would do for a job | ART BREAKDOWN

Usually post like this are public because, technically this is another, “ what I would do for a job”. Not to front, after 2-3 days, Artist breakdowns will be made public for all to enjoy.

So quick reminder— I’m Focusing on world building and now character development. I noticed either I’m working backwards or I’m taking my own Path in art. Either way— this project also works with my” what I would do for a job “, series where I show you all projects, that Ive done to improve on my art and get a Industry level Job. So I decided to really work on My character art , and visual Dev. work to display a more proper portfolio— Because mines is a bit, all over the place.

So, Facial expression was one of the subjects I don’t necessarily avoid but, most definitely dabbled in when drawing. I tried my best to add 3-4 different facial expressions/emotions in my art style — but not quite. I really didn’t want to take a risk and yet risk were, what I loved when I think about my favorite animations and art styles form other artist. So, to get me out of my My art block, I quickly started this art study;

( Here’s a few “facial” expressions I added> Honestly, I let body language take over in my art as I decided to venture more in the body form. )
( Reference From Pinterest> Procreate , IPad Pro + Apple Pencil> Waveform ( default ))

So this was a struggling. I needed to take a step back, and remember I am able to build on the pictures. My goal was exaggeration in features and realism — So I started with a single style. Just dots, lines, and the other base shapes.

( This image just shows my simplified guide ( the start ) and what I saw before cleaning and adding detail,)

Even some of the guides have a bit more details than others but, thats because some facial expression already have a mental library I can work from and is easier to draw. Some features I decided to focus on was nose bridge, brows, eyes and mouth— when trying to exaggerate certain features.

( this image is displaying what and I how I exaggerated these features. )

The next art study— I continue with facials expressions but, with a a more masculine feature. This was a bit more easier and I only found this to be a more annoying when doing more dynamic positioning for the head. I also wanted to focus on my style. I love to make sure that my characters have really great stying when it comes to their hair.

Moving on to less detailed but, still staying with in expressions— lips and noses. I’ve mentioned before, I struggle with drawing noses at the moment. So, I wanted to quickly sketch a few and got caught up with drawing lips, and yes a few eyes. If you look closely to \ the nose on the face— I have very choppy, sectioned, blocking>> this technique works well for me and looks chaotic because I didn’t add the shading ( It wasn’t as necessary something I consider to big of s dealI since, I have a understand of facial anatomy. My art goal is usually aimed to loosely reference a shared logic ( reality), because I still want the organic/ personal interpretation. This is why I’m comfortable with my “ happy mistakes.’, ugly stages.— this be come guides to draw whatI really wanted to work on and needed improvement.

Lastly, I finishe’d up with a few eye studies and face studies— this did result into a new character and someone that is completely out of the norm. If you have seen it yet here is the link? —
