I was imagining that little Pticenoga wasn't a fan of the "traditionally girly things" - but it turned out they aren't so bad, you can just modify them more to your taste and ditch the "traditional" part. I also imagined that Shade had a hidden agenda behind it, because, if her hair is styled, she'd be a bit more careful with her monster jumping, running and playing in dirt. Therefore, she'd be less messy in the end of the day, hence less pain in the ass for him to deal with xD
