Hog, the set guru

Comments

I see the thumbnail for this video after anything I watch on Patreon. It's a lovely pix of Hog, but why does the system default to this video? Does everyone else see this shot after the featured video ends?

MissiCz

Thanks Dahl, I hadn't seen the extras either, I think I'll be watching more than once, they're a little different to the ones I've seen before but brilliantly funny

@Dahl thank you! wHat! I feel like I'm watching something illegal with these bonuses?! But they're amazing so I can't stop myself

CuriousEchidna

@Dahl It's great that you do this. However, you can easily fall into the YouTube trap when you watch their recommendations immediately after you watch a FAH video. Nothing wrong with that, but then if you do it often and nothing else they will then recommend the same small subset of videos because the more often you watch a video, the more they will recommend it (which makes sense) and leave those you haven't seen as much. To counteract this, you can go into their playlists and watch all their videos every so often, so you then get a more balanced range of recs from YouTube.

Bernadine Savarin

@Kyla C It was a YAY moment when I saw those versions ๐Ÿคฉ

@Intensive Porpoise It's so funny that I may have sounded like I have a perfectly curated selection of channels. It's quite the opposite really. I just filter my YouTube recommendations because I get easily distracted if I don't, like a puppy when so many balls are thrown and would not know which one to chase. And to quote Hog, I really don't need more addictions ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜…

@Bernadine Savarin wow! I didn't know those stuff about YouTube. I'm afraid I'm very Anne Flanagan when it comes to technology ๐Ÿ˜† I went the easier way (and the only way I knew) when I subscribed to FAH (which was probably after watching the first Anne/Oisin sketch). I just went to their playlists and finished watching all of their videos in about a month (Please don't judge me! In my defence, I watched their videos right after my busiest months at work and right after getting covid from a cluster infection....sooo I needed the serotonin boost or dopamine hit if you will)

Thank you for mentioning the bonus clips from Swines! Loved seeing these versions!

Kyla C

Bernadine Savarin that's really interesting, thank you. Definitely more time and energy than I have available though, plus I think my laptop would not thank me if I asked it to handle a file the size of my YouTube history ;) I'll just have to stick with scrolling through all FAH videos and seeing where my whims take me.

Intensive Porpoise

@Intensive Porpoise I used to get that as well - the same 3 or 4 FAH videos, but it's a lot better now and recommends a good selection of them - but you need to put some work in and you will see the results in as little as a few weeks or months. What you need to do first of all, is download your YouTube view history onto a spreadsheet to get the number of views. The more views there are, the more YouTube will recommend them. It's useful to know that no matter how many times you watch a video a day, YouTube will only record it once. So using the spreadsheet, make a playlist of the least watched videos, and make sure you watch them at least once a day. That will bring the views up and increase the chances of them being recommended. Download the history every few weeks and watch the newly least watched until you have an equal number of FAH video watched history views for all of them. Then it should get to the point of you only needing to watch the last 10 videos each day, and removing the oldest one each week. You can still watch the others, but just be aware of how often. Hope this helps.

Bernadine Savarin

@Dahl sounds like you have a very refined YouTube palate. Plus three messers from South Dublin. I love your train of thought which lead you to linger though. I was just so lucky that on my second exposure (which was Last Minute Vaccination Panic), the next video YouTube suggested on screen was Getting Past German Immigration, which is a special interest of mine. So I clicked through, and in no time I was hooked. The sub followed soon after and then I had an agonising two month wait until I let myself join Patreon because I had a Big Important Deadline and the YouTube videos alone were proving far too distracting!

Intensive Porpoise

@Bernadine Savarin I'm glad I'm not the only one. My algorithm's a mess at the moment and it's making my feed really annoying. Also it's currently obsessed with offering up the three FAH "our top ten sketches" vids or live sketches every time I watch an office sketch. It's weird. Not that there's anything wrong with those videos, but when you're in the mood for office sketches that's the mood you're in.

Intensive Porpoise

๐Ÿ˜ thanks guys

@emma w, it was such a treat!

@Anja, that's the one!!

@Intensive Porpoise, I almost clicked "don't recommend channel" after watching my first FAH video "When Meetings are No Longer Virtual" for the same reason that I didn't want my algorithm muddled with too many recommendations (I just usually watch stationery, art, period films/sci-fi films/book discussion clips). And as much as I enjoyed the video, Curly Guy resembles an uncle that I disliked (my feelings for Hog have long since changed, like Elizabeth Bennet to Mr. Darcy ๐Ÿคฃ). Then I remember the Blond Guy from the video and thought, "hmm he's REALLY cute". And yet my attention lingered on The Boss because he looked like he had a cut on his face. And I started making up stories about that red spot an inch below his eye (Was it cut while he was shaving? But the spot was too high for facial hair. Maybe an alien zit he picked at? Hmmm he must have bumped into something. Or maybe he had a cat --which of course later I found out they didn't have any pets) Shortly, YouTube brought out the big guns like "When Irish People Can't Speak Irish", "Teaching Computers to your Parents", "Never Take an Irish Person Literally"...and what sealed the deal for me was "A Kerryman Gives Directions" (snorted-laughed-rolled-on-the-floor) Since then, when YouTube shows old FAH vids (that I have watched more than once, more than twice, okay, never less than FIVE times) and asks, "Is this a good video recommendation", I click on the HAPPIEST FACE. And when asked what the said video does for me, I tick ALL the boxes (yep, including the "life-changing" one huh!) arrrrr (in Hog's pirate accent), my comment's too long again, sorry!!!

Love it when you quote yourselves haha

@Intensive Porpoise Your comment really speaks to me. I usually immediately delete any non-FAH videos I've watched from my watch history just to make sure I don't mess with the YouTube algorithm (otherwise it will recommend things I'm not interested in watching).

Bernadine Savarin

Also Last Minute Vaccination Call I believe.

Just Anja

I have that slaging of Foil filmed on my phone (by chance) from my own gig. Does Foil say "You prick!" to him? That's my favorite part, I was so proud of Foiley, hahahaha. :P

Just Anja

@Dahl The first time I got a recommendation for a FAH sketch I watched it, enjoyed it, then... immediately deleted it from my viewing history so it wouldn't influence my algorithm. ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ (Forgive me FAHther for I have sinned ๐Ÿ˜”. But I have seen the error of my ways, I am penitent and continue to work hard for redemption.) It was nothing personal! I just do that a lot. I wish I could could remember what sketch it was, I think I remember the outro but have never come across one that rings that bell. Thank goodness when I stumbled across another one months later I didn't do the same again!

Intensive Porpoise

Thanks so much for mentioning the Swines bonuses! I didn't know about these either! Ahhhhh! ๐Ÿ˜€

Alternatively, Netflix could give the Set Guru his own version of BBC's "Sort your life out". You know, where a team puts all the junk from the office into a warehouse and then gives Arms and Foil two days to decide what to keep and what to throw away. And that clips are then edited in between where Hog aka the Set Guru gives tips on how to get rid of black mould in the shower. And how to organise and label breakfast cereals. And of course how to paint skirting boards.

Set Guru Hog is always a MUST WATCH ๐Ÿ˜˜ *sigh* I don't know why I enjoy seeing the mess that we don't normally see (a mess that would certainly drive Mrs. Anne Flanagan bonkers) The bigger treat for me though was when I clicked to watch this on Vimeo and found the bonuses from their Swines DVD (I don't know how long they've been there but it was my first time to see the Swines version of "The Baggage Handlers" and "Accent Discrimination") Just when I thought I've seen them before on Youtube from their older live shows and that I probably would not be rotfl anymore... I was wrong as my roommates turned to look at me (no longer quizzical though, the manic burst of laughter from me is now normal to everyone. Do I need professional help?) And I liked how Arms got back at Foil for slagging his erhm sweat patches๐Ÿ˜† Hog's "arrrrr" always gets me ๐Ÿคฃ Lads, oh lads, it's been almost a year since I saw your first video suggested by YouTube and I almost clicked "not interested" and "don't recommend channel" ... I'm SO GLAD I didn't!

And she's here on Patreon and she has IG and I adore her work! The Anne Flanagan on display is my favourite of them all *fangirling*

That was drawn and given to them by a FAHn.

I love the Anne Flanagan portrait on the wall! Nice touch.

Oh Ingrid, what a brilliant idea!

just love it when Foil's shirt matches wallpaper, never gets old just like cat videos calling their cat lawyer.... YT addict much ? nah...... God bless y'all lads

Saying Social Influencer and Alexi was just wishful thinking, we had them in January. And now to forget about them for a year-ish. xD (My second fave Foil role anyway :))

Just Anja

I was guessing McCormacks, but there's a picture of Anne Flanagan on the wall... it depends on who their top favourite family is, I suppose ;)

selkie

Second favorite family? Social Influencer Dad and Alexi? :P

Just Anja

The set guru is my interior design hero. I can't wait for his online course on wallpapering.

Like Hog's new runners. They're cool.

Emma W

I suppose that why he said it's a redone one. Love the fake hall effect, it's so clever. ๐Ÿ‘Œ

Didn't they already do the fake hall effect in the Spring Clean McCormack's sketch?

Bernadine Savarin

I believe everything the set guru tells meโ€ฆ๐Ÿ˜‚

Sandra

Always been impressed by the false hall. Looks like the time off has done you good lads. Thanks for sharing with us! ๐Ÿ˜Š
