Home to foul creatures now, the Darkmantle Caves appears to have been part of a larger exit from the underdark at one point – a massive collapse of rock hints that several caverns go into deeper veins. Access to the isolated caves is a ledge roughly 30 feet above the ground.
Once past the remote entrance in the cliff, the walls of the caves are covered in pitch mold – a damp soot-like fungus that produces a flammable slime when squeezed. Four major caverns exist within the caves, three of which are used by darkmantles and the furthest one from the entrance claimed as the domain of a nesting goose.
The darkmantles tend to confine themselves to their domain, resting motionless during the day and flying out to hunt in the darkest of nights. Their caverns are strewn with remains – animal bones and the odd skull of the curious.
The lair of the goose, clearly marked with his spoor and shed feathers, is far from secret. The walls around his nest are pecked free of all mold, the rocks piled into mounds, and the air heavy with reverberated honking.
