Why you should always proof read subtitles...

I paid a company to do our subtitles to save Hog a bit of Christmas work...then i decided to give it a quick glance before uploading.

Why you should always proof read subtitles...

Comments

So funny. The whole thing. Too funny.

factually correct errors ✨✨✨

Not all of them. I wanted to do it as a job because I depend so heavily on it but ... therein lies the rub. LOL

Ahh I see. It was just interesting for me to learn that they aren’t just auto generated like YouTube has always told me! I have sometimes gotten the message that none are available when I’ve tried to turn some on when something is hard to work out what’s been said, but mostly they’re there for me, just always saying auto generated. Well there ya go.

Jakki Kruger

YouTube has both. It will attempt to auto generate subtitles when none are available. But if you want to have completely accurate subtitles then it's best to upload your own.

We never had a „good room“ but other rooms that weren‘t used that often... Like the office... :) And then there are old farmhouses in Switzerland where there is not a good room either, but a living room and a „side-livingroom“ ... which is a slightly smaler room adjacent to the livingroom. Or in Swiss German: Näbedstübli...

The subtitle firm is simply using an audio transcription app, like Maestra, to do that. They didn’t proofread, either. Get your own app.

Even where the the subtitle person just speaks a different regional accent of English from the English of the video actors, there could be some funny mistakes in the subtitles. For example, in some Boston accents, "heart" and "hot" sound the same, likewise "fart" and "fought".

To be fair, they do have Bad Sign Language Ruins Political Rally which is similar. I'm thinking about the logistics of this one except if it's in a different language (*cough* German *cough* show us your skills, Arms! (But be sure if you screw it up, us who can speak it will slag you :p) ), it might be hard to do.

Could you come up with a whole new sketch where an advertising agency hires a new subtitle person for a video, and they misinterpret everything said in the video outrageously?

LOL! My great-grandparents' house had a "good room" that they called the parlour, that was only opened a few times a year for family reunions. And even then, we all avoided that room, it never felt warm and friendly then, though when my great-grandparents were young, it was a music room, with a piano and violins, and it got a lot more use. There was a much smaller room called the Den, that everyone crowded into instead, or into the kitchen and dining room.

Oh dear!

Then there’s me, who’s parents were swingers. As teens, Sis and I were not allowed to entertain our friends in the good room/living room, yet we later learned the parents held their ‘parties’ there.

Well no I don’t, but I don’t actually need more options, I’m just saying that I’m surprised that they’re NOT auto generated as YouTube leads one to believe, hence the needing to hire subtitlers to do this...

Jakki Kruger

Click on Captions>English (auto-generated) and you should get more options.

Thank you, I do actually know how to turn them on(learnt it from another fah fan in a comment section of one of their videos awhile ago in fact, after somebody commented that it was even funnier in subtitles) it’s just that any time I do turn them on it always says that they’re auto generated.

Jakki Kruger

If you press the three dots at top right there’s a ‘Captions’ option. Then you can switch to English, or often, another language of your choice. (Shoutout to the subtitlers).

Any room you get laid in sounds like a good room to me.

You mean they’re NOT auto generates like YouTube always tells me then?! 🤔

I suddenly remember one of my aunties having one of those “good rooms” when I was a kid. It was actually the living room, but noone was allowed there. (I would say they also had “good porcelain” there. ) The visits had to stay in the kitchen. I remember having my feet under the rugs (even walking like that) or taking my shoes off not to get things “dirty”. She moved to a different house during my teenage years, and I was shocked to see the good room’s sofa in the new house. I think it’s still there... if so, the sofa must be 25 years of age at least. I reckon they use it now, but half of her (new) house is the “good room” now 😂😂 Her oldest daughter moved out with her boyfriend years ago and I’ve been one of the chosen ones in the family to see the house: ONCE hahahahah I haven’t been invited over for coffee or anything, and we are the same age and live 5-10 mins walking distance 🤷🏻‍♀️ The rest of us love visits and having friends over, “sharing is caring”... but you see, looks like the concept can grow anywhere hahaha
