The Full Chris Hendon Interview

Hi everyone! Here's the full interview I did with Chris Hendon about his work on static in grinders, and about why he's interested in it in the first place (and a little bit more about some exciting work he's doing for the next paper).

You'll notice it is now on a second channel, which is newly minted. On there you'll find some older BTS videos that were originally released just for the top tier. They'll still get those videos early but eventually they'll end up here. Other things may end up here too - like longer interviews or occasionally longer versions of things where we felt we had to trim things for the main channel. Or maybe just random stuff. I don't know, I'm making no promises, but this is mostly about the interview video so I hope you enjoy that!

I'll probably promote the second channel with a community post over the weekend. In the meantime I've got a video coming out on Friday (tomorrow) and one on Saturday too. Things have just kind of come together with the end of the year as a kind of deadline - I'm hoping to find more of a rhythm for 2024!

Oddly, since moving to Panama, I have not had to RDT. I am thinking it is the climate coupled with the fact that the coffees here just seem to tend to grind with fewer fines. However, the coffees I brought with me to roast also produce fewer fines and the one time early on that I DID RDT, my grinder packed up. So who knows! Roast. Coffee quality. Humidity. Temperature. Moisture content of the coffee. It all seems to factor in (I have noticed my coffees roast differently here, too, dropping at a higher temperature for full development than back home again in Indiana). Finally, and with all due respect, at what point with all of this - processes, techniques, $10,000 grinders, $10,000 brewers, research studies, books, white papers - are we cutting facets on a turd? Is there a diminishing return on all of this? In the end, isn’t a fleshy meat bag tasting a cup of coffee and saying this is good the only thing that really matters?

I wonder if using a Weiss Distribution Tool works as well as spraying water. Or if the water works better because the particles never get charged instead of being charged and then spread back apart.

Elie Samuel

Patreon being the first distribution “channel” and YouTube the second. Though if there were a second secret YouTube channel with even more zoomed-in shots of coffee drops slowly pooling in a cup below I would definitely watch it :).

There's a second channel?

YouKnowHowYouAre

There won't really be purely Patreon exclusive content. Some stuff will be released to Patreon first but end up on the second channel later.

Thanks for the early Christmas gift!

I’m a geoscientist (but for rivers, not volcanoes), and I’m just absolutely tickled that this paper came out of material science questions between chemists and geoscientists! I love listening to academics talk about their work to an excited audience, so this was so much fun to watch.

Most people have AdBlockers, therefore the majority if James' audience do not give him their money. Now that's not really a bad thing, you're supporting a youtuber just by watching him, but at the same time there's nothing wrong with said youtuber producing content solely for the people who directly support him. Also this is all irrelevant because the videos on the second channel aren't hidden - anyone can see them.

Gnerus

I totally see your point. Personally, though, I enjoy having this little extra for being a supporter.

Is it really necessary to have patreon exclusive content? I support the channel because I appreciate the content and can afford it, not because I want to get exclusive content/early access. I'd much prefer it if all videos are accessible to anyone rather than limiting some of them to subscribers. I enjoy giving money to content creators who I like to watch, I detest paying for exclusive content.
