I'm on the fence about the medical treatment arc. It's providing some major conflict/drama, but it's also underlacing all these chapters with melancholy, and I don't like melancholy in this story. I miss joyfully manic and manically joyful Max.

2025-10-28 15:01:04 +0000 UTCMonth later, but still going to reply. Just to have my theory saved for posterity. Nick is Evil. Nick is not skilled at wielding that Evil. Attempts Nick makes to truly use evil to help himself or Max, he messes up in a way that sometimes undermines his own goals. Nick's greatest accomplishment would be to give Max a few Imps. Max would use Evil to enact his Good values. Because he is disgusted by the world of Football, and how compromise or greed or Other Evil has perverted what should still be a pure. For Nick to truly rake in a massive gain on his investment into Max, he needs Max to turn to Evil in order to maintain his priciples. Max wavering, in the face of an indifferent universe and a cynical species, is only natural. Nick wins when Max wins. Nick wins BIG how Max wins.

2025-09-15 07:03:41 +0000 UTCOne of my favourite things about this whole book is the theme of nick as a demon (ostensibly) and the way in which he corrupts max. All Nick has ever really done is give Max power - I genuinely struggle to think of anything actually bad or evil he's done (okay the sheffield wednesday thing was creepy, but apart from that its just been fairly reasonable reactions to max being a petulant manchild). But despite that, theres a real running theme of Max wavering on his principles, about this and about the whole maxy-club-model and the uefa gibralta team-buying thing. He keeps teetering on the edge of corrupting himself, with Nick being only tangentially involved.

2025-09-12 21:30:56 +0000 UTCI actually can't get over the WRT thing; the acronym is more syllables than saying with respect to!

2025-09-12 19:56:17 +0000 UTCHas Max even contacted that company he wants to buy? Iirc patients don't just line up in droves for experimental treatments. He should at least get his mum on the waiting list. Also Max's chances of buying that company are close to none even if he does have the money. First, if the treatment is promising, there's no way the shareholders would sell (I won't get into the specifics of what it means to bypass the blood-brain barrier but that breakthrough alone is worth billions), especially to Max who brings nothing to the table except a little cash, which they can get anywhere else. And if they do try to sell, I'd be even more cautious, since that likely means they've found a problem with the treatment and are looking to recoup their investment before bailing. In short, buying the company is not realistic. Buying an early slot, now that's possible, especially with Nick negotiating.

2025-09-12 19:30:45 +0000 UTCDid Max actually say WRT in a conversation? (UGH) Also, is late night cheese actually a thing, or is it just a Max thing? Edit suggestion: Where elite managers on eight-figure salaries conclude that way to win the league -- that way -> that the way
