Meant to reply to this ages ago! My theory is, Max's plans can always work two ways. I'm not sure using Trick in games at this point gives the game away - Max has been using him fairly often through the season. Managers play players they don't like all the time.

2023-11-19 23:03:01 +0000 UTCQuestion: doesn't playing trick and making sure he scores a lot give away the game? Like if rymarquis is going to be his agent, he'll see that trick is in favour, despite potentially being a traitor.

2023-10-29 19:15:43 +0000 UTCInsurance claims handler that solves crimes. Officer manager that discovers he is running a boileroom for a share fraud so big it would collapse the market. Baroque painter and decorator to Columbian drug lords. I can't sum up what makes a Ted Steele story so great. Chops? Player manager has the appeal of RPG and football. A mass appeal crossover title really helps even a good author. Music and food? Sex and Violence?

2023-10-27 22:04:42 +0000 UTCOne of my favorite stories on Royal Road is about a Brewer who gets isakaied into a dwarven Kingdome with bad beer. Another stars a Roomba!

2023-10-27 20:37:57 +0000 UTCI would actually read it. I’m typically a litrpg neanderthal, love me numbers going up, love me action, simple as. If it was something I stumbled across on Royal Road prior to reading Player Manager I’d definitely swerve it until it inevitably climbed up the rankings and could no longer be ignored. I’d absolutely love it.

2023-10-27 18:20:37 +0000 UTCFuck yes. I was so worried about how things were going to go and this was better than I could have thought. Both in terms of Max's decision and incredible writing.

2023-10-27 17:15:17 +0000 UTCI have had a few ideas... not quite as inane as office manager. How about cursed with knowing the true values of artworks. So the MC starts by scrabbling around antique shops buying 1000 pound paintings for 250, saves up so he can increase his game, ends by buying a Vermeer. BUT since I'm writing it, the curse ends up sickening him because now he can't look at a piece of art without seeing the cash value and it tells him his favourite painting of a cat dressed as Napoleon is worth four pounds and he's like no mate I love it. Book ends with him utterly depressed until he bumps into a hot art girl who is buying art for a museum or some shit and he's like no dude that's FAKE and they fall in love.

2023-10-27 13:49:06 +0000 UTCThis... is really interesting. I still like the end of 4 but seem to be the only one. I think if 5 overruns I can shove these chapters at the end of 4. Thanks for the idea!

2023-10-27 13:45:18 +0000 UTCGod this story is so unbelievably good. I can barely believe at times that a novel inspired by football manager systems about a guy playing and managing a team can be this gripping. Makes me wonder just how low could you go, what kind of utterly inane premise could you dig up from the depths of banality and turn into gold through author alchemy? Office manager? Painter and decorator? Insurance claims handler?

2023-10-27 12:34:39 +0000 UTCI like how your tying up his relationship with Trick. Wouldn't feel right if he was just dumped without a care, especially since Max is supposed to be all about win wins.

2023-10-27 12:08:34 +0000 UTCMud does that well enough. But the real pain comes from how the ball won't roll in the bloody rice paddy, instead slowing down to a complete stop in the middle of nowhere after normal passes. So not only is players' muscle memory thrown off causing over- or under-hit passes, but now they have to apply a lot more power for each pass, causing fatigue, cramps and muscle injuries.

2023-10-27 11:33:19 +0000 UTCBut also, this would make a really great end to a book, if you’ll reconsider bumping a few chapters to the previous book.

2023-10-27 11:21:02 +0000 UTCIs there a way to leave just a little bit of clippings and keep it moist so when you play your cleats get covered in little bits of grass and clog up your spikes? Because that is the embodiment of hell.

2023-10-27 10:51:00 +0000 UTCXavi Hernandez would approve of this chapter. People who leave grass long and overwater the pitch will burn in the deepest of hells.
