I'd also like to call out your ability to, at least once or twice a chapter, throw in a turn of phrase from different characters that is so natural from their perspective it just makes them feel so lifelike. My personal favorite from this one was Boggy: He's thinking 'it if isn't broke, don't fix it'. Spectrum: Extremely sure he never thinks that. Ah, here we go.

2023-07-28 20:29:27 +0000 UTCI imagined what those two would talk about and decided it would be sth like that, with Barnesy always being three-quarters of a breath from saying 'well actually the thing I most remember is [xxx]' where that's some absolute horror that would make Sumo never want to play a shooter every again. So I'm glad I got it right even if it was more or less a throwaway line! Those details add up.

And if you recall, a couple days after the attack, the injury suddenly "wasn't as bad as initially feared." This is clearly the healing factor Max gets from the player system.

Really good chapter to end the book - feels like a nice revisiting of the themes and characters, setting up some new conflicts and laying others aside. I just hope Max is all right- head injuries can be insidious and horrific.

2023-07-28 13:36:13 +0000 UTCManager Points seem harder to get than Xp. Do they spend harder too? The chapter bookends the book well. Can Max stop getting hospitalised? Can police stop arresting the black person closest to the scene ffs ? "Isn't he the one who took his team off the pitch because the referee booked a deaf player"? This makes better 'journalism' if Gary adds "for playing on after the whistle" to that question. Booking a deaf player in itself is usually fair treatment for a foul or somesuch. End of opening trilogy party!

Third off, Max's paranoia ended up being (unfortunately) valid, but my guess is that this was by Old Nick for a force reboot and update the "old system". Love to see what's in store in book 4. Also thank you for naming me your favorite reader towards the end there, I'm honored.

Also, side note, as ex-army I can confirm 10/10 accuracy for the interaction between a COD player and someone who has done the job!
