At your lowest, you’d prayed for a guardian angel. You got a dragon.

You didn’t mind at first. It was kind of cool. You were the only one who could see her so, of course, for a while you thought you were insane. Then she accidentally set a tree on fire. You couldn’t deny that the flames were real. It was good to know she wasn’t.

She followed you around everywhere after that.

There were benefits to it. The bullying stopped. She reminded you to eat. She made sure you got to work on time. No one bothered you on the street. She would push people out of the way. You’d laugh as they’d be moved by an invisible force.

You weren’t afraid anymore.

But somehow, it still didn’t help. You still hated the face you saw in the mirror. You hated seeing the ceiling every morning. You wanted to sleep and never wake up. What was the point? Nothing mattered when the pain was all you could feel. Nothing mattered but getting the pain to stop.

Your dragon wondered why you grew steadily worse. You couldn’t bring yourself to tell her. At one point you showed her some vent art, hoping she would understand.

You didn’t think she did.

Today you sat outside in the rain. It was summer; the rain was warm. It felt good on your face and hands. Good was something you hadn’t felt in a long time.

She came out to check on you, to sit with you.

And you leaned against her.
