I think it's pretty clear that all of the denizens of WwF have experienced some trauma in their past, to varying degrees. In fact it's difficult to zone in on anyone who might have had it the worst--nope, no, it was Kittiwake.
I guess we're still doing vent art today, eh? There comes a time when Kittiwake opts to divulge to Red and Valerie the gruesome abuse she suffered in foster care, before her beloved parents adopted her as a preteen and got her the help she desperately needed. I think I mentioned before that "Kittiwake" is not her original name; she wanted to leave her pre-adoption life buried sixteen feet in the thickly-packed dirt. Red and Valerie need an adult. You're never grown up enough avoid being shaken by some traumatic events, especially if those events happened to someone you love.
I'm not going to get into specifics here, because, like Valerie, I'll probably throw up. Maybe when I'm older.

2024-06-14 21:59:01 +0000 UTCOh my goddd my poor little Kittiwake 🥺 I kinda figured she went through some shit in foster care…I swear it’s sometimes the sweetest most fragile kids who have the worst stuff happen to them. It seems like it made her stronger but I wish she never had to become strong at such a young age. You really have a talent for creating illustrations that make me feel for the characters without any words. I can totally guess what Red and Val are thinking: Red is overwhelmed by the realization that there are some things you can’t fix no matter how strong you are, Val is probably wondering how something so awful could happen to someone so sweet (maybe with a dash of self loathing: Kitty is so seemingly well adjusted compared to Val who probably sees herself as even more of a mess than the audience does)

2024-06-14 19:12:31 +0000 UTCThe fact that Kittiwake managed to end up the most stable and level-headed of the three tells me two basic things about her: 1) She's had a ton of therapy and worked like Sisyphus to overcome trauma of that magnitude. 2) She has a mind and spirit of cobalt titanium. Absolutely indomitable, even if she'd never believe it. I've seen the broken remnants of one too many people that were put through what I know Kittiwake was. I'm damn glad she has Red and Val to lean on, though. She deserves such friends. There are very few things that actually would make Sylia snarl and bare her teeth. What was done to Kittiwake would be one of them. It might be the only time she would seriously consider breaking her Explorer's oath and hurting a Tiny. ETA: This is one of many reasons I keep Sylia non-canon. She'd end up either giving Kittiwake the biggest hug she's ever known or someone, somewhere, would eventually have a *very bad day.*
