Totally Digital Itzel

As you know, I do all of my lineart in physical pencil and ink, and I paint in Photoshop. I am the only artist in the entire world who does this; everyone else draws digitally, like normal people in the year of our Lord 2024. I can not figure out how to draw in Photoshop, at least not in the style that I currently enjoy. So tonight I was like "fuck it, do a drawing start to finish in Photoshop". This is what I produced. It's kind of neat, but it took twice as long as it would have in my pencil-ink-Photoshop style. It's also vaguely nightmarish, though that's never stopped me before.

I miss the physicality of animation. Everything is just airless when you're watching it on a screen.

I LOVE that you still hand-draw on physical paper, so I don't want to say anything that will stop you from doing that. However, I'll mention that everyone around here uses Procreate, which I think there's a free version you can use, and then the paid version is only $12 or something. Might be worth looking into.

Good on you for expanding your horizons! Itzel looks pretty good, here.

For a while I was stuck on the precipice of Photoshop dying out. They were starting their subscription service (ugh) and I was in the middle of it. I downloaded GIMP and Alpaca in the meantime but didn't get the hang of either. I hope it's not just a matter of old dog, new tricks. The style I have I love SO much, but admittedly pencil and ink is not really conducive to comic book art anymore.

Really? I really liked FireAlpaca's line stabalizer function, made lineart way easier. But I digress! Here are some alternatives for a Mac: Krita, Clip Paint Studio, Medibang, Paintstorm, MyPaint, Corel Painter, and Rebelle. Krita is free, as is GIMP, though the latter leans more toward photo-editing than drawing. I've also heard good things about Photopea , a free PS clone for your browser. Keep trying til you find something you like! I had to go to war with my current program, Procreate, to make it feel natural for me, and it's still hit and miss. I'm gonna be trying out some of these other programs myself

I’ve actually heard lots of comic artists doing it that way! Tho I will say I had hell using photoshop, I use clip studio now and find it a lot easier. They even have a handy convert to opacity tool where you can crank up the contrast on your scanned stuff and turn it into transparent lineart

It's got a cool style, like an indie comic or rpg. I really like it.

I mess up a lot too, heh. But when I scan I can fix small inking mistakes in Photoshop. What I do is I scan inked pieces into the program and then use the Threshold function to turn my soft lines into hard pixelated black lines. That makes them easy to paint with the bucket and brush. I don't think anyone else does art this way, at least not anymore, heh.

I used a wacom and the Photoshop brush tool. It kind of gave me a physical brush pen feeling, and the style morphed into something weird and kind of cool. I will not use the Photoshop pen tool because I can't get any nuances (facial expression, etc) with it. Mac doesn't support Sai (to my knowledge) and I think I tried Alpaca before and wasn't feeling it. What's a traditional artist to do?

I think this looks cool! I don’t think it’s unusual for your style to change in a new medium..this kinda reminds me of one of those old newspaper comics. Also for what it’s worth I still do all my sketches on paper…I find it easier and leaves me less likely to hyper focus on tiny details Also I didn’t just find this out but it always impresses me how clean you get your lines using pen…when I tried doing lines on paper it ended up being a white out mess cuz I messed up so much

Interesting! Did you use a drawing tablet? The reason my old pony art looks so crunchy is because I honestly struggled to draw in Photoshop for years. Getting decent lineart was impossible, I usually just colored scanned pencil drawings or used photoshop's pen tool (which takes forever). Obviously it's possible to draw well in PS, but it's a software designed for photo editing, not drawing. Would you consider trying out a different program? I found it waaay easier to draw in Paint Tool Sai and FireAlpaca (which is free to download if you use a PC).
