Dec Special: Of Mammoths And Menorahs
Added 2023-12-10 22:46:03 +0000 UTCHanukkah started a couple of days ago, and despite the fact that this pic took way too long to complete, I somehow managed not to miss the festivities! Here, the Friedman/Best family celebrate eight crazy nights back in the 80s.
Ida Friedman was, and probably still is, the queen of the Friedman herd. Her then-husband, Gnewton Best, is a gentile who never converted, but was content enough for his children to follow their mother's traditions. Ike Best (then called Ivy Friedman) was the baby of the herd, cherished by both parents, but scrutinized by the otherwise-daughter-lacking Ida. Her and Gnewt's two beefy sons, Isaac and Ira, were already tuskers when Ike was a calf, and mostly squabbled amongst themselves as young bull pachyderms are wont to do.
At present, Gnewt is divorced from the herd, and he and Ike are not in contact with Ida, Isaac or Ira. Their differences are irreconcilable, but happier times were had, once upon a Hanukkah.

Indeed, even though they are antagonists to Ike and Gnewt's happiness, I am not willing to make Ida and her older sons villains in WwF. Ida will never be Sheila Broflovski. However, she wants what she wants out of life and she's the boss of this herd, dammit. She's also clearly a woman of class and refinement. I very much appreciated this opportunity to introduce Ike's family, and I'm genuinely pleased to hear that I did them justice.

2023-12-11 00:38:26 +0000 UTCOkay, for one, the lighting on this is phenomenal. 💗For two, I have always been dazzled by your ability to express so much about a character from their very first appearance. Like immediately I have a strong feel for Ida and the older sons personalities, and they haven’t even said a word! It’s already obvious how Ida feels about her perceived daughter vs how she does about her sons, who’s bickering she’s probably dismissing with a “boys will be boys mentality”, while Ike has her full attention. I adore Ida’s holiday garb, and the way she’s scooping babie Ike up with her trunk so loving and tender is just. AH! *chef’s kiss*. I expected to see a moody teen Ike for this, so seeing him as an adorable tiny tot is such a treat!
