"And in that moment, something fell into its proper place inside Alsesta. All her life she had avoided things that prohibited her from making a choice. The things one could not choose were all meant to cause pain, such as the fact that she was born a mule, and the death of her beloved father. Careers, pets, even lovers: all were a matter of choice. Where one could have, and keep, control. But when Minolta lay her arms around Alsesta and whispered 'mother', the muleicorn realized something. They were not a family by blood, but by choice. Minolta chose her as her mother, of her own free will. Alsesta slowly lowered her hands, unsure of how to proceed, but as her hands found their resting place on Minolta's back, she realized that family could also be a choice. And that was OK."
