Supernatural Season 4 Episode 21 UN-CUT REACTION!

sam and dean... :(

Comments

If you get a chance to watch the commentary track of this episode, it’s worth the time to hear them discuss their thinking re the demon blood detox scene. They definitely wrote it as a drug addict coming off their drug and the hallucinations as “the drug” talking to Sam, trying to justify him continuing his use. Jared did such a great job portraying Sam’s decent into addiction and the behaviors associated with withdrawal. And Dean ... the poor man. Watching his brother become this other version of himself. How would you deal with something like that, other than trying to get them to detox. It’s not like there are rehab centers for a demon blood addiction. || great reaction, as always. Thanks.

At this point I don't think Sam even doing that for the greater good, he just drinks blood because he can't help it and blame Lilith for what he has become, so I thinks it's why he is so obsessed with the idea of killing her. He blame her for everything. I know people thinks Dean should've been more gentle with Sam, but some don't even realize that from the beginning their purpose is to hunt monsters and specially demons since yellow eyes killed their mother, and now Ruby pops up from nowhere telling them that she wants to helps them but Dean is seeing her pushing Sam into the wrong way, and we see at the end, he tells him that he is okay to hunt Lilith with him just not with Ruby, but Sam choose her. In Dean's mind, Sam choose a demon over his own brother and he seems totally okay with that, so that a part of why he thinks Sam is a monster, and he wasn't easy for him to say it. It's hurting them both, but Sam isn't thinking straight, attacking him was wrong, Dean shouldn't have answered back. However, it's interesting in terms of relationships and characters to see them change, evolve and discovering some part of themselves even if it's a dark one. I think Sam choose the wrong time to ask his brother to trust him when it's clear that he can't think good. We are going to explore this failure in their relationship in the future, because Sam was right about something, Dean is bossing him around and they have some problems to solve. Can't wait to see you react to s5, it's bigger than this one and better.

You're right, but I don't think Sam wants to be the hero but now that he is deep in drinking blood I think he want some positive to get out of it, like he is drinking blood but it's okay because it's for the greater good. He's making excuses for his bad behavior.

Sam isn't acting like himself clearly due to the addiction. Ordinarily, he takes a backseat to Dean's choices, backs down, takes Dean's punches, and now he is hyper-aggressive. He won that fight becauseeee of the aggression. Again, normally, brute strength alone, he's stronger and bigger, but he generally softens his blows or avoids hitting Dean entirely, is "the bigger person". In this instance, even hyper aggressive, he's trying to talk it out with big brother, asking to be /heard/. Dean was told to be gentle and kind to him-- instead, he attacks who Sam believes to be an ally and then turns around and attacks Sam verbally. It's ridiculously wrong. That said, Sam is very much not in his right mind. I think that he is clearly deeply affected by the addiction, but how does doing what Dean did de-escalate the situation at all. Then the next layer, as far as they know, he is the best solution, especially if there is only one more seal. I don't know. They paint Sam as being in the wrong heavily and yet there are so many forces acting upon him from the entire heavens to demons, to his entire upbringing with demon blood, the fact Dean sacrificed himself and he was left alone to grieve/blame himself, etc. Then along comes Ruby. And now, Castiel. Awesome character or no, he is also fucking Sam over. Dean isn't seeing a broader picture or even trying to understand. He would have let Sam die alone in pain in that bunker. Bobby is the only one in the right here because he saw both sides; I have a feeling he would have saved Sam from Dean's "ethics" were it not for Cas' intervention.

Yes Sam’s addiction is clouding his judgment and impacting his behavior. But strip away that (and some of the insults and at the end violence), Sam at the core rationale is logically sound. 1. Sam is told throughout the season that Lilith must be stopped! Can’t stress that enough. 2. Sam is told by at least 5 people that what he is doing is bad, evil or wrong. But Uriel who threatens to kill Sam for his use actually is working to free Lucifer. Castiel who has told Dean, who told Sam has been not the most upfront or honest ally (and that’s with the boys I assume not being told that Castiel has never meet God, doesn’t know where his orders are coming from or that he himself is considering rebelling), we have Dean (who freaked when he thought his brother might be psychic without any connection to demons and has s very difficult time with the possibility that not all monsters are evil, we have Pamela, and then we have Chuck the Prophet who says it’s wrong. But Chuck also when asks by Sam says that it looks like it is up to Sam to stop Lilith. 3. We have only seen Sam’s powers being successful in taking down powerful Demons this year. 4. Dean is set to kill the demon that supercharges him. 5. For multiple episodes we have seen Dean openly say that they aren’t ready and aren’t capable of stopping Lilith. Even if he wasn’t going through addiction what logic choice did Dean actually give Sam? Even Bobby thought Dean might be wrong,

Okay so after watching this episode, and all the episodes for that matter, I think I'm more of a Sam girl than Dean. Dean's decisions and bravado always bother me. BUT I will always say that season 4 Sam is by far the most annoying. I am 💯 on Dean's side. There is absolutely no excuse for the way Sam acted, besides of course the Demon blood. It's almost like Sam wants to be the hero so bad that the thought of Dean ending this is so hard for him to believe....and by the way, the only reason Sam was able to beat Dean in that fight was the demon blood. It makes him stronger and more aggressive. Like I said in general as someone whose watched every episode 1,000 times over, I consider Sam the more independent, capable, reasonable person, but here, he is WAY out of line. In my opinion. Anyway glad you liked it. See you next time.

I love the catch 22 at the end of this episode. You have to pick a side. Sam or Dean? The angels or Ruby? Do you let Sam possibly sacrifice his humanity to try to stop Lilith? But the real question...how long can you wait with the season finale sitting right there in your playlist calling to you?

Adam

This is easily in my top 5 episodes. I love the conflict and the betrayal, on every ones part. so good.

Conflict makes good drama, and it doesn’t get much better than this. Excellent episode, and sets up the finale beautifully. Talk about having your expectations subverted...
