Pretty sure they only work on demons, we've never seen him use them on any other 'monster' and they do stem from what a demon (Azazel) did to him. This isn't a spoiler, btw, because it's my own interpretation of what we see. I'm just pretty sure that we're meant to take away from it that his powers are demon-oriented, only. Like how his visions was always about/related to Yelllow Eyes.

Starting with the next episode all the rest this season are really good ones (to me anyway). I can't wait for you to see where they are headed.
