If you remember both Isak and Marti were still hesitant to kiss Even/Nicco in public even after they became "official". And I think thats because they were in more denial. Like you said early on in the season Lucas kind of already accepted that he was gay, unlike Isak who had a lot more internalized homophobia, and Lucas was just mostly hiding from his friends and other peoples judgement. So, seeing this scene (the ending scene) is so much more heartbreaking because Lucas was finally at a place where he was out to everyone and becoming so comfortable in his skin and with Elliot. He was so affectionate at school and not afraid to kiss him and say "this is my boyfriend".
