For more reference on this, the races of multiple characters in the show were changed from the books they were based on. In the books, Simon and Luke were both white, whereas in the show they are Latino and Black respectively. Hope this sheds a little light on the situation.

All the directors wanted was to make sure Alec and Izzy looked believable as siblings, but the race of the actors didn't matter. Matt Daddario (Alec) is white, Emeraude Toubia (Izzy) is Latina/Lebanese, and Nicola Correia-Damude (Maryse) is Latina. The dad and the brother are both white.
