Nothing wrong with making a sentient tool as long as your willing to let it choose its own path should it so wish. The rule you need to keep in mind is never make something you can't kill if you have to. Better sure to give it morals, ethics and no reason to try but even with that never make something you can't kill if it becomes necessary.
