I think he was just that stupid. From the fathers comment he should have brought one of his other sons I'd say this one was picked for martial might rather than brain power. Also why I suspect she might stay this way and possibly be made a slave herself. He has other more intelligent sons to make heir while she's just an embarrassment. Even if they can reverse it quickly she still drank a random potion in a conquered keep based on a label with not attempt to identify it or consider if it was a trap.
