Fancy Movie Time #22: Ikiru (1952)

On this episode of Fancy Movie Time with Brian and A.J., the Fancy Lads go on a bender with a novelist and die on a snowy swing as they cover Akira Kurosawa's 1952 bureaucratic tragedy: Ikiru. Does the film's luscious cinematography and poignant insights into the nature of being make it a Fancy Feast? Or does the film's reliance on melodrama and dramatic third act turn make it a Failure to Fancy? One thing's for sure: A.J. has certainly seen a lot of the hit NBC procedural The Blacklist.

Ooo mama. Excited to listen to this one. Kurosawa is one of my favorite directors ever and Ikiru hit me hard.

Oh my god. I just realized. The Bull charged and killed him because it saw Red. What color is a Matadors cape? That's so stupid I don't know if I should be annoyed or impressed.

In fact he could be considered an inspiration for Pete Buttigieg. Both served in the Military. Both served in Naval intelligence. Both went into the private sector to consult for criminals. Both went back into the public sector in a position of authority.

Correction, James Spader's Character in Blacklist, Raymond "Red" Reddington, known as "The Concierge of Crime, is a middleman who connects various international criminals in order to facilitate the the highest profit margins foe crime. He McKinsey Consults crime.

Is there a particular age-minimum for a movie to be considered "fancy"? I just saw The Substance, and I would be fascinated to hear you guys discuss it.

the whole time listening to this it kept reminding me of Perfect Days from last year in a lot of ways. is that a fancy movie? i'm not a huge movie guy but i loved it

Carter Kriss

The swing scene is so iconic and so powerful. I don't know if there's any other movie scene that can make me tear up just by remembering it

Damon DiSabato

Maybe not Looper, but Rian Johnson's first feature film Brick would probably be a good fit for Fancy Movie Time
