91 - Awake (2012)
Added 2023-06-14 05:27:42 +0000 UTC
Brian and A.J. slap on some red/green wristbands and summon a CGI penguin to help them solve the mystery of Kyle Killen’s cult TV one-season wonder: Awake. Topics include the absolutely wild premise, the advantages of casting two broadway legends as therapists, and the importance of taking big swings on network television.

Not sure if it really was a one season wonder or intended as a single miniseries but my personal “have you heard the good news about…” is a BBC crime drama called River with Stellan Skarsgård which is (imo) both a fascinating show and great portrayal of mental illness, which is also why I defend it from getting compared to Raines.

Fascinating how much that show’s own producers seemed to hate it and torpedoed everything good after season one. The background of it is…so weird.

I think a lot more people were naive to the idea of multiple universes back in 2012 simply because Bioshock INFINITE came out in March of 2013 and so many people were blown away by the idea of a multiverse. So happy someone else was as into awake as it was airing as I was, I saw each episode as it came out with my mother back in the day and was really enraptured by the way it tried so earnestly to tell a story that seemed so bizarre for network TV at the time.

Oh dang, talking about the background plot is giving me flashbacks to The Mentalist, another procedural from the era. Spouse and I were OBSESSED, was he gonna get Red John? The Blake Association thing was so stupid though. Snickered everytime these grown men went "Tyger Tyger!" to each with serious faves. LMAO. Simon Baker did so good though at insta flipping from charming and smiling to cold blooded.

“Sure sure sure” is the only reason I listen and I am actually only half kidding because it soothes me

One thing maybe worth pointing out about the "multiverse vs time travel vs dream/ reality" debate is that Inception had just come out two years before this, and I don't think Nolan had spoiled the ending yet by that point. That may have played a role in critics getting fixated on the "which one is real" question.

Our early 2010's weird procedural of choice was the (deranged) glory that was 'Sleepy Hollow'. Any fans among the lads?

OMG, I watched Terriers. Finally, a reference I recognize.
All shows I like get cancelled. It's like a curse.
P.S.: Have either of you watched "Fringe"?
That's a show that went straight into the memory hole.
It ran btw. 2008 - 2013 and if I remember correctly, it was about parallel dimensions waging war with each other.

A minor point: Donnie Darko is technically a time travel movie as well as a multiverse movie, only instead of it being a character moving through time, the time traveler is the falling jet engine, which both generates the multiverse by landing incorrectly, and later fully collapses the created unstable multiverse when it goes back through time and lands in the "correct place", that being "directly on top of Donnie".
