2023-05-25 11:39:48 +0000 UTCJosh's point about the "teaching entrepeneurship" spin on child labor reminded me heavily of this month's mayoral election where I live in Philly - the victor, Democratic machine candidate Cherelle Parker, unveiled this nightmare pilot program to institute year-round schooling. The main horror of this proposal is how openly carceral it is (her pitch is that if kids are in school they won't shoot each other) but there are all these little gracenotes about "preparing kids for the economy" and "educational partnerships with trades" - you can practically hear all the skeeviest construction firms chomping at the bit to have 14-year-olds put up five-over-ones for nothing but shop class credit. All I could think about was how as usual the libs found a way to make the right's reptilian exploits somehow even more skin-crawling.
