73 - Hamlet in Canada: Slings and Arrows, Season One

The lads hop into their ham trunks and floor it to the Great White North as they cover the trials and tribulations of the New Burbage Theater Festival in 2003’s hit Canadian TV show: Slings and Arrows. Topics include the series’ roots in the Stratford Theater Festival, magical Shakespeare harps, and the enduring legacy of one of the only successful TV shows about a life in the theater.

Since it came up in the episode, I feel compelled to share my design for Hamlet. (2000 University of Georgia) Not produced for... Reasons.)) I was obsessing over mixed media at the time so the set was going to be "see through" (hanging flats suggesting windows, plexiglass furniture (I had this vision of grand flower vases made entirely of acrylic)) with time-lapse weather scenes projected on the cyc to "reflect Hamlet's mood". It was heavy handed as shit and I am simultaneously proud of and embarrassed by it.

Oof. You make this show sounds so interesting, but I'm pretty sure watching it would just make me depressed, tbh. Just listening to you discussing the show is like opening a Pandora's box. The elusive high of a great performance, working with a group of talented people that you get along with, the wonderful moments when a scene suddenly clicks etc. I miss that and I have not found anything that even came close to filling that hole... It's so funny. I knew from watching your YT videos and listening to the first couple of podcasts, that there was something about WOAPW that was tailor made for me, I just didn't know what it was. Something about this particular group of lads that felt weirdly familiar. It took me quite a while to figure out what it was. :D

this preview is what locked me down as a subscriber!! theater kid from a theater family. I had the pleasure of discovering this at the local library and watching it with my entire family as a kid. slings holds a special place because I feel like it's maybe the only good theater media that captures the industrial conditions that this kind of art is made in. i was a lighting electrician (and am now a Real Electrician) and god does everything in this show just feel exactly like every summer theater festival and medium size regional theater I ever worked at. i... almost miss it... almost.

When I watched this show for the first time, I was procrastinating on some thing in college and watched the whole first season in one night. It’s one of those things that is so far up my street but I don’t know if it would be up anyone else’s street. So I was excited for this episode and rewatch the whole first season before listening to it. This was a fantastic idea and I had a good day as a result. Rachel McAdams freaking out and saying “is there anything better than this“ is basically how I Feel after acting in or seeing any theater It was so nice to hear some people nerd out about this show in the same way that I do, I’m so glad you used it as a palate cleanser of something good!
