2022-11-25 22:44:33 +0000 UTCThe mommy blogger's line about the virtue of "turning away" from things that scare or confuse you adds to this maybe reductive, maybe armchair-psych theory I have that so much of evangelical parenting is driven by fear of the inevitable complexity and terror of growing up that the parents remember from their own lives and want to believe isn't inevitable. I feel this too in the conception of Odyssey as an environment, and in the approaches to The Talk described in the Young Man's Battle episode - this sense that parents recall traumas and difficulties of their own childhood and get this idea that they can shield their kids from experiencing the same. Growing up I remember that it was possible, if you really finessed it, to line up perfectly with this painless "maturation" the adults in your life wanted for you - you would be this insufferable ROTC/rotary club dork, and then your entire selfhood would collapse horribly sometime 18-24 because all the shit you're meant to go through during puberty (that the adults remembered hating and thought they could shield you from) would hit all at once.
