If you guys want to tackle a couple other shows that give this vibe these days I would recommend the 2000s Battlestar Galactica reboot (especially the fact that the only socialist is a lying, murdering, manipulative terrorist) or The Last Ship (which is about a global pandemic that one American Navy ship is trying to solve). (His character has casual sex with and falls in love with a man who turns out to be the exiled Iranian prince who he’s supposed to kidnap.
